Quite possibly the lowest attendance for a Bradford V Leeds fixture during the entire SL era.
My glass is half full.

Not sure I agree. Given the nature of his idiotic penalty in the first half, which directly led to a Bradford try, I was inclined to feel that the second half penalty, also leading directly to a Bradford try, was born of a similarly inexcusable outburst of petulance that a senior player ought to be ashamed of, given that there was hardly any provocation in either case.

Except its not.
1996 was lower - 10,229
Can William tell us the attendances for Bradford v Leeds before the disaster that is SL was created? Along with the appropriate percentage increases or decreases obviously.

| Some very sloppy penalties conceded and some lapses in defence but overall a 20 point win away from home after they snatched a draw at our place will do.
FWIW I blame our players for the penalties Silverwood was always gonna give them and we made it easy for him if both JP and Mags had stood still and pointed out they were trapped in the tackle he might not have given them but the way both reacted left him no choice.
Saying that we still did a lot of good stuff especially in the first half and when they gained momentum in the 1st 20 of the 2nd half we dug in and hit back.

I thought it was a good performance with some really good rugby at times (from both teams). Leeds had a game plan which they executed very well for most of the game - quick PTB's and use the big guys, Kylie and JP up the middle and get JJB and Delaney hitting those little cut back angles a couple of passes off the ruck - but still all fairly central. Achurch's try was a classic example of what Leeds tried to do all night.
Kylie had a stormer, as did JJB and Delaney. Mags and Sinny pushed everyone around. The big disappointment for me was Burrow. He ran from dummy half a lot but he doesn't make a yard in the tackle - once he's hit he stops. Contrast that with the havoc that McShane caused when he ran from dummy half. I'd say he contributed massively to Leeds getting a grip back at the end of the first half.
Good things: we had a game plan that looked well thought out and effective and we stuck to it the whole game instead of going to pieces when Bradford started to put pressure on (which they were always going to do at some point). A pretty determined defensive effort, everyone worked really, really hard. There was some outstanding individual play also.
Not so Good: dumb play from Peacock and McGuire more than once cost us points. Silverwood has to give penalties, it's in his DNA, so he will pull up a PTB at regular intervals no matter what. We gave him the chance to penalise us instead of Bradford. FWIW this is my biggest irritation with refereeing - refs who can't go a set length of time without blowing their whistle. I saw very little to be penalised from either team at the PTB, some were a little longer than others, some weren't cleared as quickly but very hard to really pull any that were obviously deliberate messing about. If Silverwood had only blown for the high shots and the odd forward pass then I wouldn't have had any complaints. In fairness to him though I thought he did a reasonable job.
Bradford were fired up, they were at home where they beat us last year and they drew with us only a few weeks ago, so they were going to be a challenge during parts of the game. I thought when they went behind they actually played some great offloading rugby and our defence deserves significant credit for stifling that for most of the game.
And I might even venture that some of the players tried quite hard and might have even cared about the result a little. Obviously, not as much as in the days before Superleague, but nice to see a little effort going in from a few who obviously haven't got the message that they are all apparently wasting their f*****g time during the regular rounds.
Maybe a smart person needs to go in the changing room after the next Leeds match and educate them?

This week: Four keys to a Rhinos win in the WCC:Transparent Backgrounds/Waldorf.gif |
|
| Good first 40, poor next 20, then recovered a bit of composure and put the game to bed before switching off again.
Some very clever angles run by the back rowers in particular. Achurch took his opportunity to fill the gap left by Ward, and Delaney was his usual hyperactive self.
A quiet word needed this week in training to a couple of the senior players about discipline. It's been much improved since Easter Monday but there were signs it was slipping again last night.

| For me the worst penalty conceded on the night was Peacock's in the 62nd minute for having a hand on the ball - on the fifth tackle. A real coach killer that one.

Think Danny mags penalty when he had his leg trapped was also on the 5th tackle.
In general I thought it was a good performance with the usual 20 minute period of going to sleep. The pack is looking strong and the back 3 ran some good lines.
And as we line up now as the sky pundits stated its not a good choice for the opposition kicker hardaker, hall or Watkins to kick to. Not a great choice

| Bailey was truly awful, Peacock ank Kylie especially were fantastic.
Also how good is Hardaker?
This looks like a very formidable Leeds side, intent for a change in taking the League seriously.

he is not going to do that - Jeff only uses stuff that suits his agenda - the fact attendances were truly dire for the 20 years prior to SL has been erased from from his selective memory

IIRC we conceded twice on the 5th. As has already been mentioned, we seemed to have improved our discipline in the last couple of games but reverting back to our old ways. BMc needs to get a handle on it.

Just watched the match (after avoiding the result - quite easy in my part of the world). Have to agree .....and Watkins too is a joy to watch. McShane has steadily proven his worth
......(wonder where the club might try to accommodate Burrow next; after McShane and Hood claim the shared hooker's role )
