It kind of loses it's impact when the derogatory word is replaced by "little nice guy". What's that all about ?

| Quote: leeds owl "Something quite cringeworthy that's crept in over the last few years is when a person is asking for something in a shop/pub and says "Can i get ?". It's normally snotty little students or those "young professional" types you see in All Bar One and the like.
Yuppie type, "Can I get two pints of lager"
Me behind the bar, "Of course you can but what do you actually WANT you little nice guy?"'"
It's the trendy 'baristas' that annoy me with their use of of 'guys' & 'today'. "How are you guys today?" "Will you guys be dining with us today?" "Do you guys want a pastry with your drinks today?"

| This isn't really a "Mis-used phrase or expression" but it's kind of still on topic about language/attitudes that are slipping in more theses days...
Cold callers/salesman have started opening the conversation like they're your best mate. I despise it.
*Phone Rings*
Me - Hello...?
Voice - "Hiya old buddy old chum, how are you today my good friend?"
Me - Fine thanks...?
Voice - "Good stuff... you all ready for Christmas? How about his weather we're having eh?! Do anything interesting last night? What colour underwear did you opt for this morning old buddy old chum?"
Me - Do I know you...?
Voice - "No, I'm Peter... I'm just calling to see if I can save you money on your [whatever]?"
Me - No you can't Peter. P[ii[/iss off.
I don't know who on Earth has decided that's a good marketing technique but it doesn't work on me.

| The other half always moans about sports commentators' conspiracy to abolish the adverb. So much so that I've actually started doing it myself just to wind her up.

Aberrant apostrophes are always annoying (as is affected alliteration) but I find the unnecessary apostrophe when using "its" as the possessive pronoun as opposed to "it's" as the abbreviation of "it is" to be particularly irksome.

I'm delighted that you capitalised "Earth".
It's so often written as "earth" these days in publications which would not dream of using "mars" or "saturn", etc.
Also, when I was at school (a very long time ago) I'm sure we were instructed to capitalise biblical places like Heaven and Hell but they're nearly always written "heaven" and "hell" these days.

Ah yes, well spotted. I'm particularly irked by Earth/earth. Likewise with World/world. I'm sure that world is grammatically correct these days, but it will always be World to me.

Is Heaven & hell still open in Leeds? I seem to remember it being more Hell than Heaven though

| Whilst we're on capital letters...
This is going to alienate some on here but it annoys me when people ignore capitals in usernames/screen names. Which is obviously creeping in more with forums/twitter etc.
Twitter is particularly bad for it. Every time I see @rickygervais it annoys me. Why didn't he set it up as @RickyGervais. Likewise @stephenfry. More people should be like @DaveGorman.
And whilst we're on twitter (hopefully folks that use twitter will hopefully agree with this!), hashtags aren't allowed to have spaces, which is fine. But when people use hashtags that have multiple words in, I'd really like it if they used a capital at the start of each word. Not strictly grammatically correct but it makes it a lot easier to read. For example #RugbyLeague rather than #rugbyleague. Especially so when they start getting longer. Clare Balding (who AGAIN... is @clarebalding1, what's wrong with @ClareBalding1!!) is currently complaining about female representaion at the SPOTY Awards, and using the hashtag #womeninsport which would be much easier to read if she wrote #WomenInSport
On the forum display names etc. As you can see, I'm Remarkable_Rhinos. We also have LeedsBornWelshRoots, which is a prime example of how I'd like it to be!
leicester_rhino.... you should be ashamed of yourself. For a start... it's your user name, and names have capitals. Secondly... Leicester is a place so leiceter_rhino is wrong on two counts. Hang your head in shame!!!
