Regardless of injuries, financial constraints and any other excuse that people can come up with, the face remains that he had 38% win ratio as head coach at Quins over 4 seasons and a handfull of games in 2006.
It has never been proven, but SOMETHING went on in June 2009.....we went from 4th with a 10/5 record to 11th with a 11/16 record by the end of the season. Now.......call me Fox Maulder if you like, but there is no way on this earth that this massive slump in form can be put down to anything other than the coach loosing the dressing room IMO.
I didn't miss anything in any of the posts regarding his promotion to the new head coach at Leeds. He knows the set up there and will also know what is expected of him, but the fact remains he is unproven as a coach at this level.....
I appreciate that he didn't have the funds available that he will at Leeds, but the fact remains he did seem out of his depth at Quins......I suggest you try to find a few BBC match reports and read his quotes...the ones about being happy are pretty funny....given he said it after most games we had been hammered in

| Not inspired by the appointment but then again GH has shown generally good judgement overall when its come to coaches - Murray, Smith and Bluey have been excellent. Powell was OK (some on here would say much better than OK). Only Lance was a bad mistake.
My only feeling is that McDermott could do with an assistant from the NRL who has a handle on all the latest ideas and techniques. That's what Maguire brought to Wigan, and I'd like to see some of that at Leeds too.

I understand that the scope of his role at Quins was very much wider than it will be at Leeds. It may be a bigger club, but he will concentrate on 1st team coaching, without having to worry about the other aspects, which will be picked up by others at the club

Nothing other than the coach?
Could it not have been that the coach was actually with the players, but that the boardroom had lost the dressing room, rather than the coach?
I think you might find, yes you did have a problem at that time, but it wasn't directly down to the coach.
There is always an easy choice when people are guessing isn't they?

| I've had a look at Coach McDermott's record with Harlequins over the SL Regular Rounds and come up with:
Played 117, Won 44, Drawn 3, Lost 70, 39%
__________
Home Record:
Played 57, Won 25, Drawn 3, Lost 29, 46%
Away Record:
Played 56, Won 16, Drawn 0, Lost 40, 29%
Neutral Record: (Millenium/Murrayfield Magic)
Played 4, Won 3, Drawn 0, Lost 1, 75%

That settles it then! Lets have the new South Stand built now and play at a neutral venue next season! 2 birds... 1 stone.

| Quote: tvoc "Weren't you among them?
I seem to recall a comment of yours that suggested McNamara would follow a similar path to that trod by the previously unheralded Matty Elliott. I replied it wouldn't. I guess one of us was always going to be more right than the other.'"
Probably. I had high hopes for McNamara who had come through the "boot room" like his two predecessors, I guess as a fan I was hoping for the best and didn't really know much about his abilities. In hindsight the difference between McNAmara and Elliott and Noble was that those changes were carefully managed whereas McNamara came in a year early and had to immediately manage a transition. A number of senior players had been allowed to leave too which didn't help this, (possibly something Brian Mac will have to manage).
Looking back it's obvious that he wasn't ready for the job and was still learning. From taking over we finished lower down the table with each season (like Brian Mac at Quins) He too had problems with recruitment (like Brian Mac). Despite having the full cap to play with from 06 to 09 he made some awful signings (Tupou, Worrincy, Sheriffe etc).
In short having seen how McNamara did for us I can see paralells with Brian Mac at Leeds. The one thing you do have in your favour is that the club itself is on a firm financial footing.

I hope you're wrong again but this time I think I'm minded to agree with your assessment.
The head coaching position is (in footballing terms) the most important appointment in the club, IMO. Get it badly wrong and you've no chance, almost regardless of playing personel.
It's time for all Leeds fans to be crossing their fingers and trusting in the judgement of the CEO.

| Quote: gutterfax "No..He didn't. Any number of reasons can be rolled out for the migration from a team full of aussies in 2002 to a team with more English players than any other.......and I wouold suspect Finances would be the main one!'"
so did he stop the over reliance of Aussies or not?
Quote: gutterfax "He was at the club at the right time.......he reaped the benefits of the academy set up that has been around for a while.....for the record, Tony Clubb and LMS gained caps as a result of the work done by Tony Rea as well as Mac and both were coached and "blooded" by Rea......since then, in his 4 and a bit years we have had no other capped Londoners. The conveyer belt of Talent is only now coming into its own and last year a fair few of the kids who played for the 1st team weren't ready.'"
Ah right. So if they were any good they were the result of the previous coach and anyone good coming through now is nothing to do with Mcdermott. Ok then
