| Shoebottom
had it all, no one else near him, power skill just sorry it was cut short. Hardisty and Mags come second but we didn't see the best of Hardisty

| For me it has to be John Holmes. Shoey was a great physical player with 120% enthusiasm but Holmes had all the skills and was a real head up player that made other team mates look so good.
Of you were to make it the last 50 years I would go with Lewis Jones

| It's a tough question, considering different skills, eras etc. but my father, who saw them all up to Harris, rated Harris as the best Leeds back since Lewis Jones.

| Never saw Shoey or Hardisty. Of the ones I saw I'd say Holmes.

Funny enough, both my dad and grandad have said exactly the same thing, having seen all those players. Speak very highly of all of them, but said Harris was the most gifted and perfect stand off out of them. My Dad has always been a big big fan of Hardisty though.
Personally I can only comment fully since holmes, but also see Harris as the best stand off for me.

I'd rank 'Stretcher Boy' last in that list above.

| Lyons was unsettled at 6 for some reason. He made the switch to 7 and then found his feet. I don't know why changeing the number on his back made a difference, but better at 7 than 6.
Best 6 we really never used was Dave Heron. Had enough pace to play 6 and everything paprt from the kicking game (although I have no idea if he could kick or not, there really was nothing resembling a kicking game used until we introduced the handover and then it took the Brits years to understand there was more to it than the up and under). And yes I know they used to have kicking duels in the days of unlimited tackles, but I think John Holmes kicked the ball in open play 2-3 times (really badly) in the recently televised '78 Cup Final game.
Harris was better when used at 1, Schofield was a better 3 - although he was a terrific 6, Holmes was 6 when I started watching Leeds so I can't comment on Hardisty or Shoebottom as I never saw them play. I really don't understand what McGuire is not supposed to have been able to do that the others mentioned could do. Of course it's pretty fashionable to slag current players and pick them to bits, but his try scoring record, his ability to win games for us - and big games, his overall quality of play and his record as part of a tremendously successful team have to rank him up there.
The only successful 6 I've seen is McGuire. He's regularly outplayed his opposition for the last 6-7 seasons.

Fletcher: Course, he sees 'imself as an authority on curry, he does, on account of where he was stationed in the army.
Rudge: Where? India?
Fletcher: No, Bradford.:d7dc4b20b2c2dd7b76ac6eac29d5604e_40413.jpg |

He means McGuire but his sentiment remains pretty vile and ill informed.
