| Quote: Juan Cornetto "Of course the game has changed since the 60s / 70s but you were the one to use Ashton and Newlove etc as examples of large centres. I gave examples of smaller centres who were just as good.
.
Back play has deteriorated in recent years and the policy, you seem to advocate, of choosing on physique rather that skill is one of the reasons for the decline.
A centre first and foremost should have the speed and ability to make breaks or half breaks and then have the awareness and ability to create space and offload to others. This means good feet, good hands and good rugby intelligence. Of course he has to defend but this does not mean he has to bve the size of a second rower.
So there is no reason a player the size of Golding or Walker cannot make a fine centre.
It is this obsession with size over skill especially in the development years that has failed to produce the Hepworth and Hardistys for the modern game. We have to make room for the smaller players who have pace and skills.'"
Didn't Newlove play in the 90's/2000's?
The game isn't just about attacking - the centre has to be able to tackle effectively - not easy to tackle a 16 stone juggernaut when you only weight 12/13 stone and are 6" shorter.
Even hookers are 6" and most half backs are 5'10"+ this is the modern game - players are bigger and stronger with just as much skill. In the older days the game was much slower so the players had the time - look at old games and see how slow it was - these players would not have the time to play the way they did - Im sure they would have adapted.

| I think Rob Burrow's stint at hooker has brought the average height down.

| Quote: Sal Paradise "The game isn't what it was in the 60s/70s - There are only 2 centres in SL worth mentioning Watkins - who is the size of a second row and Percival who is almost as big.
In the NRL the centres the best ones in recent years
Lyon was not small but would not say he was the size of a second row Jennings is only about 5'10" Renouf was not big at all Tate was about 6',2" but slight.

if he is the best and a long way better than Golding, then we need to recruit a fullback, walker may come good but he is two years away from being good enough, showed that yesterdayl when he was on the field, nowhere to be seen for two of there trys and was left for dead by lineham, he has no pace whatsoever, the fact that last year Gareth Ellis tracked him down and tackled him in last years semis says a lot.

but none of them would have been considered a natural second row size or a natural second rower would they. they were always natural three quarters, Francis cumming was just shy of 6'2" and about 14st but you would never think of him as a second rower.

I disagree that current SL players are as skillful, and Burrow showed that height does not matter if your tackling technique is good
