Quote: son of headingley "Does anyone remember the standard of sports (of all kinds) coverage pre-Sky? - so there's one area for starters where they have not driven up standards (you might want to revise your use of the phrase "across the board" above?)'" Did you know that the BBC's production and technical expertise means that other countries are paying for the BBC's coverage of the olympics?
Quote: son of headingley "Costume dramas & natural history are the only things they appear pretty decent at. Wow wee. Oh, and using other people's money.'" And yet BBC worldwide sells over £1b worth of programming per year to other broadcasters.
Quote: son of headingley "Whilst the BBC were critically important to world news pre-1980s they are now only as relevant as any other independent news broadcaster. CNN led the way to 24-hour news channels, online news was not pioneered by the BBC.
If we were having this debate in 1968 I think you would have a good argument; not in 2016.'" And yet the BBC is regularly seen as more trusted by both Britons and those in other countries.
Quote: son of headingley "My "State TV" comment was said tongue-in-cheek.
'" But it is hugely wrong so needed correcting.
Quote: son of headingley "Purely subjective & misses the point entirely. It doesn't matter if it's good value for money or not, nor whether it offers high quality output. Should someone feel that it might not be, what option do they have? Other than getting rid of all radios & TV's from their house? At least Mr Murdoch doesn't demand everyone has to pay to watch ANY television programmes. He lives & dies by the quality of his output. Not so the BBC.'" The invisible hand of the market doesnt exist. Sometimes we can have better things and cheaper than when profit isnt the sole priority and when sales arent the arbiter of success. Profit is not an indicator of quality.

There is a professional 7's circuit with high quality coaches and very specialised players competing. Simple fact is that most watching it don't understand what's going on. Too many remembering 20 odd years ago when Wigan rocked up and at an amateur domestic tournament that was widely considered a bit of fun by Union clubs.
There are reasons they run the angles they run and why they throw long flat passes. Also, anyone noticed how the breakdown is reffed? It's brutal so you can't get isolated with the ball - especially in a game where possession is everything. Some of the comments in this thread are what I would expect an ignorant rah rah to come out with after watching a game of rugby league.
Also, criticism of the "quality" on offer is highly ironic considering the total cack dealt up by "Super"league and in particular, Leeds, this year.
Anyone who is surprised that John Inverdale is positive about the sport he commentates on needs to take some tablets. Inverdale gets in my t1ts as well but it's his sport, what the f*** do you expect him to say?
Looks like GB will come away with at least a silver now after "upping their game" to beat SA.

Typical "you don't know what you're talking about" response when someone criticises.
The attack again still wasn't good, and I'd say South Africa were actually the better team but GB did produce some very good stops in defence.
And I didn't say I was surprised by what Inverdale said, just mentioned what he did say. Eddie and co sprout stuff like that every week and I don't see anyone defending them saying "oh what do you expect them to say?"
Also didn't realise that Leeds having a poor season meant I was unable to critique any of the Olympic sports I watch. I hope Leeds perform well in 2020 so I'm allowed to watch the 2020 Olympics.

Well ill bow to your superior tactical knowledge but to me it looks like a huge amount of space been wasted and overlaps been blown.
There have been plenty of situations where i would expect a league or Super Rugby team to score where the ball hasnt even progressed forward.
With regards specifically to avoiding turnovers, i can understand that being a consideration, but there has been numerous times there has been an open side three on three or four on four where either an arcing run to draw a man or a pass and straighten up will bring the defence in wouldnt isolate anyone but instead the ball is looped out a couple of times and the winger then gets tackled without progress. The 'set play' GB ran against Argentina was a nonsense.

| I watched the premiership 7s final at the weekend and was surprised at how the games seemed to be played. As mentioned above lots of lateral movement, long wide passes and an emphasis on hitting the pace in the wing. after amending a day watching that I concluded that the chanhe in numbers and the affect that has on energy, the breakdown and set pieces name that the game is played in a different way to the other forms of rugby. Judging it by the Rugby played in superleague or the premiership is like comparing different cycling race types

| I'll stick with my view on the GB 7's team I think. Granted Fiji played really well but watching GB attack in comparison was awful. Just passing along the line to a static man who took one step sideways then passed to the next static man who took one step sideways then passed until they got to the wing who doesn't have an overlap because they didn't bother to work one.

| Funny listening to people say that League players would "rip up" that Olympic sevens tournament.
Jarryd Hayne couldn't even get in the Fijian squad.
Union 7s is all about tying in defenders then moving the ball into space. You get tackled in possession and you are in big trouble. Given the passing standards of some of the supposedly better players in SL, it's absolute rubbish to suggest it would be a walk in the park for them.

| It's a power game now. Big, very fit guys looking to get there arms beyond a defender and offload. I'm pretty sure that's why NZ gambled on SBW. Also, they are trying to hit really hard in the tackle and win a turnover. Watching the Fijians tonight, they are so strong they don't get put to ground. Offload rather than a contest after a tackle. 7's is very, very tiring. A very fit 15 a side player would take at least 12 months to adapt. Tactics with the ball are a combination of tiring the defence, managing the clock and probing for a defensive error. You also can't go balls out the whole game and you have to keep the ball.
GB have done amazingly well. England have not been strong on the circuit for a couple of years now, Wales and Scotland rarely trouble the better teams. The whole has definitely exceeded the sum of the parts.

| Gas defence was woeful - tackling technique was frankly embarrassing as was their inability to recycle the ball at the breakdown.
However on far more important note Yorkshire made the finals in the 20/20 - David Willey take a bow

| Id not seen fiji play before but knew they were the leading 7s team, but you can see why. They were mych more direct than anyone else ive seen play and I guess they are well suited to play a game based on strength as long as their fitness can handle it. It clearly can, and they looked a class apart. It really looked like men against boys, and the gb lads just couldnt complete a tackle and were ripped apart on the back of that

| Fijian rugby has been revolutionised by Ben Ryan's arrival. They had very much an amateur attitude in a professional era, in terms of the players lifestyle off the field. He's sorted that out and got them focused on their rugby first and foremost now.
With the pace and power they have, if Fiji could master the setpieces they could really become a major force in the fifteen a side game.

Fiji would never have the participation levels to compete with the likes of he powerhouse southern hemisphere sides let alone England

Ben Ryan has added a missing piece, but 7's was pretty much the Fijian nation national sport already. They had been the team to beat for the last 20 odd years but the game started to change and they got left behind a little. Ryan has brought them in line with other countries and the power game rather than fast and loose.
I think if SA had made the final the result might have been different. SA are very strong also and only just below Fiji in the rankings in 2nd.
To give some perspective on GB's performance England are ranked 8, Scotland 10th and Wales 12th. Kenya and Argentina have a higher ranking than all the home nations.
