1140_1361875489.jpg Leeds Rhinos? 8 for you, Leeds Rhinos! You go, Leeds Rhinos.

| Quote: nantwichexile "He and Medley were the new Eccles and Cookson, I used to think. (The tackling machine alongside the hard fast running blockbuster). One of my fondest memories was seeing Roy making a (rare) long distance break, where he showed a great deal of surprising pace. From my position in the Southstand it was towards the Carnegie stand end...but that's all I remember. I couldn't tell you who the oppostion was or what the outcome of the break was. The break itself has just stayed with me
Might have been against Wigan in 1988. The match where Schoey got four tries. If you put Leeds Wigan 1988 into youtube, it's on there.
Not only does Roy make a fantastic break, he sells a peach of a dummy to Andy Gregory too.

| Played some part in 14 out of 15 games on the 1990 Lions tour to PNG and New Zealand - effectively two games a week for 8 weeks on the bounce.
Incredible effort for anyone, let alone a forward.

| If he had been born a bit later it would have been great to see him playing with this current generation and win a hatful of trophies. As a a professional he was ahead of his time at Leeds. Will always be a great favourite of mine.

1883.jpg Didn't William Webb Ellis pick up the ball and run, someone should really tell Rugby Union.

| Once went to a charity dinner and the team was there and afterwards we all went back to David Wards place and Roy Powell instead of sitting with the players who by this time a few were carrying on Divorty pretending to blow poisonous darts in Powells direction .Roy Powell sat with us the fans and just said ' yes ok Gary' to Divortys silly racism .Like what has been said he was very polite and quietly spoken and seemed to enjoy our company .The good die young

| As a younger man I remember watching him and not being impressed as he didn't seem to be doing a lot (i.e. screaming down the wing for a hat trick - I was young, what can I say).
As I learnt more about the game I realised what an essential part of the team he was. He became one of my favourite players.
In a strange way he taught me more about rl just by watching him than most other people have with their 'expert analysis' etc...

Great points!.
Looking back, I still feel he was a bit too 'nice' for his era and lacked that bit of nastiness and intimidatory factor required to really be in the top echelon of forwards back then - I had a conversation with Eric Grothe fairly recently on that subject - we both agreed on that point and said he'd have excelled in today's sanitised version of the game. He was an absolute athlete back then, imagine him with today's training regimes and sports science.

He would have been frightening with the level of conditioning players have now. Easily an 80 minute prop

Superb post and one that summed him up perfectly. Possibly the nicest Leeds player ever.
He loved the fans and we had many a good night in his company in the mid-80s when players and fans would de-camp to the Smiths Arms after a Sunday game.
I know for a fact that if the press were struggling to choose a man of the match, the default position was 'give it to Roy' because he could never be faulted for effort.

| was a raw prospect that became the finished article and didn't need to straight arm people as rarely missed man and ball.
paul dixon wasn't a dirty player either but very tough .
