| Let's not worry too much about replacing him (as fans) because it's pretty much an impossible job. Let's just enjoy these next 2 years. The man is incredible-an absolute warrior. There are few players who can claim to be bona fide legends of 2 clubs like JP can. Either his Leeds career or his Bradford career would make him an all time great. The fact he has both and such longevity makes him by far the best British forward of his generation in my opinion.

| The man does the work of 2 props. We're going to need a couple of quality props to replace him.

| Not a case of "replacing him" imo its getting better players around him to help him with his work load and therefore lessen the impact as much as possible when the inevitable retirement happens.

| I've made the argument before that limiting his minutes probably has little impact. His body will still be a mess the next couple of days if he plays 30, 50 or 70 minutes. The best scenario for me would be to give him a week off every so often where he can rest his completely and not do the build up, game or recovery.
As much potential as Singleton has he needs looking after a bit as well-I have no real issue with his game time tonight. Their pack looked impressive on paper tonight and just shielding him from the limelight this early in the year may have benefits at the business end of the season.

I was thinking ahead to the season after next. Incidentally, it looks like Carvell has picked up a bad injury tonight, so in hindsight it maybe a good thing that we didn't go for him, and Asotasi looks like another overseas player here for a holiday.

| Fair points Andy and that's where our coach has failed in the past with his squad rotation/management imo.

There aren't that many seasoned props going to be available. Griffin was that and never really looked the part. Developing singleton and Delaney to play in that position maybe out best bet. And then who else we can bring through in the next couple of years. Will be interesting to see how Yates goes as well

I agree to an extent, although some of the criticism of him is way too much. Neither Smith or Bluey rotated well at times either.

Smith did during his first couple of years, and Bluey always seem to show faith in the young players.

Smith gets lots of credit for rotating a lot but that's not how I remember his tenure as a whole. MacDermott has shown faith in young players too-and developed young players who were already established first teamers. If we're going to criticise him for everything let's praise him too. BJB, Watkins, Hardaker, clarkson, singleton, ward, sutlciffe have all developed since he's been coach. I don't for a second think it's all down to him but when he's thought a player's good enough he's not been scared to throw them in.

| Couldn't believe it when they said he'd done 60 tackles on SKY. Immense effort! Especially someone his age. What's the record for most tackles in a match?
I think of the best decisions he made was retiring from
International RL. Two years I ago I personally thought he was struggling and was a shadow of his former self (unsurprisingly when was the last time he had a proper off season before retiring)
Since retiring its like he's got another engine.
Absolute immense effort and a definite legend of the game!

Think he made something like 53/54 against Warrington last year when we lost 19-18 at their ground.
Believe Danny Houghton made 60+ last year in a game for Hull that was on Sky.

I think Steele Retchless holds the record with 65. Although I wouldn't be surprised if Houghton surpassed it.

Tony Smith's selections left a lot to be desired at times.
When we played Hudds in the 2006 CC semi at Odsal and lost he started JJB and Scruton as starting props and Peacock at 2nd row and Bailey on the bench. He thought going away to St.Helens we'd be better off doing the same thing although that time it was Thackray instead of Scruton.
JJB was actually selected at prop that year more times than Peacock who got moved to the 2nd row around the half way point of the year.
Sinfield played 24 league games in 2005, only 3 were at Loose but some would tell you it was Brian McDermott who switched Sinfield to Stand-Off.
He played an unfit player in Senior in a CC Final and it backfired massively, he bought Ian Kirke, went most of his tenure without a proper back-up hooker, moved McKenna (who'd made a good transition to 2nd row) back to centre when Senior missed the remainder of the 2005 campaign instead of given a young one a chance, saw us with props of the calibre of Thackray, Mark O'Neill, Chris Feather, Wayne McDonald. We also saw the likes of Liam Botham, Shane Millard, Nathan McAvoy. The sort of things McDermott takes abuse for.
Interesting to note how some have a go at McDermott for not dropping out of form players yet on the Warrington board now they're not happy with how Smith sticks with Atkins and Myler. Also when someone said O'Brien should stay in the team for next week as he played well another poster replied "he'll get dropped next week for Russell......play well and get dropped......it's the Warrington way."
Yet some Leeds fans still think he was amazing because Ali-Senior-Bai were a deadly force down that left hand side.
