When making comparisons, it always makes sense to compare like-for-like situations.

The 2009, 2010 and 2011 seasons weren't like-for-like play-off situations because the NRL employed a different system during those seasons... 1 v 8, 2 v 7, 3 v 6 and 4 v 5... which is more likely to produce blowout scorelines. This is the reason that SL wouldn't dare adopt that system for fear of 70 or 80 point hammerings.

Therefore, the only like-for-like comparison to be made (notwithstanding the ridiculous club call) is in 2012. The data from this year is incomplete so far, but the latest figures are as follows...

2012 Playoffs
SL - Winning team avg. score - 37.8........Losing team avg. score - 12.6........Difference 25.2 pts
NRL - Winning team avg. score - 29.6.......Losing team avg. score - 12.6........Difference 17.0 pts

But SL have had these 'meaningless' loser gets a 2nd chance games where 1 team usually doesn't bother (probably the reason why SL is 2.2 pts higher and not lower than the NRL) so in a way the SL's system is more of a disadvantage to its own figures than the NRL's.

No amount of posturing by yourself will change the fact that you're making a non like-for-like comparison between two very different play-off systems... though I will credit you with the bold attempt... unlike Mr Paradise who is well known for establishing the crudest of comparisons from the most limited of data sets. Perhaps he'll employ you on minimum wage or workfare at his ailing company instead? icon_smile.gif

Yet you used the incomplete and at different stages so far 2012 playoff results to try and turn the tide. Minimum wage would be way too much for you.

I see the NRL keeping up the tradition of having close semi's and GF's after today's 32-8 win for Canterbury. Massive congratulations to the NRL for adopting the SL system though as it's given them only their third 1st v 2nd GF in the last 8 years (hence rewarding the more consistant teams like SL usually does), but when you consider that the previous 2 were won by scorelines of 40-0 and 34-8 then perhaps that isn't a good thing.

The average points difference in NRL semi's and GF's has now jumped up to 16.7 compared to SL's 10.7

Your job is to say to yourself on a job interview does the hiring manager likes me or not. If you aren't a particular manager's cup of tea, you haven't failed -- you've dodged a bullet.:icons077e_files/5454-3678dentheman-msnicons.jpg

Just trying to reduce the number claiming unemployment - also I am looking for someone who can progress through the company longer term. The work is quite technical and requires some understanding of SQL and databases, hence the need for a graduate - as I previously stated it will not be on minimum wage or anything close to it - HTH sorry again to urinate on bonfire.

Now where were we - close game the Storm v Manly would you not agree?

Another close one today Bulldogs just scraped through by 24 points!!

Feel free to keep me entertained with your non like-for-like comparisons icon_smile.gif

And congratulations to Canterbury on reaching the Grand Final after several seasons of not even finishing in the Top 8... they finished bottom in 2008... such is the unpredictability of that competition. Good effort from Souths too given they won a qualifying final for the first time since 1987. I considered them the only whipping boy NRL rabble club but not any longer.

I do believe the SL season finally kicks off next week. Oh, it'll be Wigan, Saints, Warrington and Leeds again icon_lol.gif

Good for you mate. If I was younger, I might have been interested myself... quite familiar with relational database design, theory and normal forms. Hope you find someone suitable, that's the primary key.

Quote: Sal Paradise "Now where were we - close game the Storm v Manly would you not agree?'"

Yet still played at a level of skill and intensity that SL can only dream of.

Quote: Sal Paradise "Another close one today Bulldogs just scraped through by 24 points!!'"

Bulldogs got battered during that first half hour. Souths lost their influential halfback to injury and Sam Burgess played like an indisciplined meathead. Game turned just before half time and it was all over. All good for me because I had a couple of punts on Canterbury to win, and to win by 13+... happy days icon_smile.gif

Hope you enjoy Warrington disposing of the remaining whipping boy SL rabble team later this evening.

"The Golden Generation finally has its Golden Fleece! They have Wembley Cup Final winners medals to add to their collection." 23/08/2014:

Quote: William Eve "Feel free to keep me entertained with your non like-for-like comparisons
I gave a like-for-like comparison in the results of the semi's and GF results when the situation is the same...4 teams, 2 had the previous week off, no 2nd chance. SL fares much better than the NRL in the like-for-like comparison, but because it doesn't help your views you bury your head in the sand about them.
You come up with (expected) poor reasoning for the closeness of the findings (the 1st vs 8th system NRL had) but the results show that has helped the NRL as the current 17.8 points difference in the newly formatted 2012 Playoffs is the NRL's highest in those 4 years shown.
You cry for consistancy from teams in SL week-in week-out wanting their best yet NRL has the likes of

Sydney Roosters - 1st & Grand Finalists (2004) 9th (2005) 14th (2006) 10th (2007) 4th (200icon_cool.gif 16th (2009) 6th & Grand Finalists (2010) 11th (2011) 13th (2012)

Canterbury - 2nd & Winners (2004) 12th (2005) 2nd (2006) 6th (2007) 16th (200icon_cool.gif 2nd (2009) 13th (2010) 9th (2011) 1st & Grand Finalist (2012)

Both finished in the top 2 and contested the GF the same year (2004) as when Leeds did to claim their first GF & LLS, yet only twice has either made a GF since whilst Leeds have reached Old Trafford 5 more times and are 80 mins away again.

Penrith - 11th (2009) 2nd (2010) 12th (2011) 15th (2012).
Parramatta - 8th & Grand Finalists (2009) to wooden spoon in 2012.
NZ Warriors - 14th (2009) 5th (2010) 6th & Grand Finalists (2011) 14th (2012)

Where is the year-on-year consistancy??? The greatest teams have prolonged success over several years, not 1 good year and then slip away for 3 or 4 years. You'll say this shows how easy SL is that the same clubs like Leeds can stay at the top but i think it shows how in NRL you can be a 1 year wonder and afford to drop to an extent that you don't even make the playoffs for a couple of years and it doesn't really matter as clubs relax on their past success. I'd rather have teams that prove themselves repeatedly over the course of several years, not once every 5 years thanks.

Will, why do you let them wind you up so easily? It seems anyone just has to mention anything approaching derogatory about the NRL, and you're off.
