| There was a piece in RL World a couple of months back which touched on this. Written by Chris Westwood, I think. You might like to try contacting him via League Publications Limited.

Could have been "Star of" David Smith?

| Yes. Wilf Rosenberg (the Flying Dentist) came to Leeds from South Africa where he was a centre in the Union code. He became known as a scorer of spectacular tries including a brace in the win V St Helens in the Championship semi final of 1960/61 helping Leeds on their way to securing their Holy Grail V Warrington at Odsal for the first time.

Also was there once a Jewish RL comp in Leeds and Manchester?
Just trying to get some background info.

There was a Darren Coen who played for Bramley, amongst several other teams (including Dewsbury) - I think that he was Jewish.

| I've no idea of his religious background or beliefs but Darren Coen, IIRC, started out at Bramley and came to prominence in the 1st Division (as it was back then) at Castleford for a few seasons in the early eighties.

He scored 43 or 44 tries in one season that still maybe a record helped by that underrated centre Derek Hallas who would straighten his run into the gap and "fix" the winger before giving Rosenberg a chance. Wilf was a great finisher with pace and there were many photos in the papers (the Green Un etc) of him horizontal to the ground several feet in the air - hence the nickname the flying winger. (or Dentist)

The 44 he scored in the 1960/61 season is still a Leeds Post-War try scoring record yes. Eric Harris would regularly exceed that figure in the thirties, topping out with a 63 in 1935/36.
The closest any Leeds player has come since Rosenberg I guess would be Ellery Hanley in 1994/95 with 41.
