I'd assumed bus lanes were there to give buses an advantage over cars that might encourage car users to switch to using the bus - cutting congestion and being greener.
I just don't see how allowing taxis this advantage does anything for the environment or reduces congestion.

Well they are technically public transport. But in most cases actually less green than a car.
Not sure when taxis were allowed into bus lanes, but its been a long time, and probably before most people / councils were so green concious.
Probably down to revenue etc

Household bin emptied every week. Blue paper bin once a month, brown garden refuse bin once a month.
And Emma, trams have conductors, we have them in Sheffield, along with a nice big fat Arena.

I would have thought they were there so the buses can at least attempt some proximity to their time table. If you want people to use them realibilty is pretty important

Yeah but the issue is over why taxis are allowed to use them. As Puig has said it doesnt help the environment or reduce congestion.

Until it changed fairly recently, First had given the number 4 service 61 minutes to get from Whinmoor to Pudsey, on a route where only about 100 yards of it is in bus lanes or on dual carriageways.
In morning rush hour traffic you'd be hard pushed to do that in your car, never mind having to stop every two minutes to let people on and off. Not surprisingly, the timetable was very rarely adhered to.
It's the reason bus timetables now say things like "..and at least every 10 minutes until..." on them, so they can't be accused of not keeping to timetable during peak times. It's an exercise in fiddling punctuality figures.
Hopefully the move to London-style franchising of bus services in West Yorkshire will force companies to address the way they treat their passengers.

Car sharing isn't it!
You drive down the road that's one person in the car you do it in a taxi theres two people in the car. Two people in the car means you are being green.

In theory, yes.
If the went on strike again, they would be protected from the sack for another 12 weeks. However, for the strike to be legal the union would need to sanction it, and they won't sanction a strike over something they have just agreed to.
Council wins.

| Why not make it compulsory for every family to own at least one car (legally) and ban all public buses.
Yes, there would be an increase in vehicles on the road, but it would flow easier without fecking bus lanes and without buses clogging up traffic stopping to pick up peasants.

Seeing as my house collectively own 4 cars, do we get even more dispensation?

And what would you do for someone that say, lives on their own and suffers from epilepsy and therefore is unable to drive a motor vehicle for obvious reasons ?

| It was interesting to see where the bin men held most of their meetings about the strike .... Gone have the days of having a mass meeting in the Queens Hall (deceased) .... These days they're held in the Jongleurs Comedy Club !
