It might not be their call either, if they've been given a game plan that involves trying to slow down the PTB and turn each tackle into a wrestle (as commented on this afternoon) then individuals out on the pitch might not want to make their own call about changing that game plan.'"
Granted but game plans need to be flexible. If you are constantly getting pinged for an offence then if the players are not quick enough to realise then the coaching team need to be.
In this league now you cannot afford to have 17-7 penalty counts as more times than not you are going to get beat.

A disappointing game, made all the more arduous by having to stand near some of the most ignorant (of the rules) and, sadly, loud, fans of our team.
Rather than worrying about officials, we should be worrying about our performances (if there really is any need to worry this early).
Have Wakey had refs on their side so far this season? Hull? Warrington? Wigan? I suspect not, they've played well. We need to start.
P.S. as I left the ground I texted the Mrs and told her there'd be a thread on here about the ref.....'"

Last week for example Ian Smith was allowing some very slow play the balls but today by comparison Child almost seemed to want immediate roll away so neither we or the players know where they are one week to the next.
Whatever people may think of todays Ref a 17-7 penalty count is not good enough and players need to adapt much quicker to the style of the ref in any given game and quickly learn what he is and isn't letting you get away with.'"
This is what I always find myself saying about players from any team. Ref's are very inconsistent and as you say don't all penalise for the same offences.
I think Child was a bit generous in our favour in the first half but as you say players should learn faster and if a ref is penalising for slowing down the PTB then they need to learn to roll away quicker.
As for the OP I think you need to watch your own players when defending your line as none of them had feet behind the line either, as most teams don't but it is one offence that ref's hardly ever seem to penalise yet it must be one of the easiest to spot.

We generally dont blame refs. We certainly dont start petitions to get one out of SL when he's had a perfectly good game but our team lost.
That's Trinity fans job

| My problem with Child is that both teams (IMO and it may be biased towards Leeds) played the same way in the tackle yet Leeds were penalised a lot more. If you take off the Webb dissent and the Watkins offside from the kick I can't see where we commited twice as many penalties as Wakefield. That said we gave them momentum with poor ball control and the majority of the time the team with momentum gets the advantage in the penalty count.
On the other hand with a bit more composure we could have quite easily scored another 2 tries to snatch at least a draw so we're not a million miles away. Congratulations to Wakefield on the win, best team definitely won.

| Much improved performance on last week! The ball moving about a lot easier and some fantastic tackles in the second half
I felt there is still a lot of problem holding onto the ball and looking for repeat sets, as I have said before Mcguire is not the best of kickers and he seemed to be doing most of it today, hasn't learned his lesson on when to kick after getting away with it at Cas last year
The ref was very inconsistent and at times laughably bad, if the attacking team kicks the ball and hits his teammate in the back of the head that's probably offside and a penalty
The play of the ball is very messy this year, I've noticed it in the sky games as well and it changes from game to game

| What are players supposed to do when they've been killed by offloads so they try their damndest to stop the major perpetrator by clamping his hand and the ball to stop the offload? That attacking player then struggles to offload the ball & drops it in the effort of trying to offload & the referee penalises the defending player who had his hand on the ball. When the defending player, who happens to be the skipper, queries the decision he is sin-binned.

/respect mate.
It takes a lot of integrity to go against the flow and say it how you see it on the back of a loss like that.

| My thoughts;
We had enough ball to win the game at a canter - our attack was pretty average on the day.
Childs wasn't brilliant to say the least but we should have won despite his reffing style.
The biggest issue for me was Brough onside for the interception - I would suspect not but it is impossible to tell from behind the sticks.
We lost 4 tries to 3 and bombed 4-5 serious chances, some down to good last ditch defence from Wakey.
The concern for me is the interplay between Burrow and Sinfield which seems all at sea at the moment, the lack of impact from either Buderus or Senior and the inconsistency of some players - early season though
On the positives; Webb was excellent, Bailey as good as he played, Eastwood looks like he could do some damage and Hall's defence when they were down to 12 was superb.
Cannot win every week
