| Trevor Patterson and Tony Currie produced the goods. The rest varied from reasonable to very poor in what was produced. Grothe was clearly a great player but not used properly.
I saw every game that season including away at Workington town with a crowd of less than 1,000, it may be lowest ever attendance for a competitive Leeds match. IIRC they were very unlucky to lose away at Hull KR in last game of year in premiership semi final.

I also attended the away fixture at Workington, courtesy of Wallace Arnold.
Seem to recall the feeling of being short-changed when the teams were announced over the tinniest sounding PA system imaginable that Eric Grothe wasn't playing.
Leeds scraped a win in a crap game.

Me too. Wally Arnold. Paul Gill came out in the 2 shirt. There were some French fans who also travelled up from London to see Grothe. He was a bit of a legend after the French leg of the '82 tour.

Probably on the same coach!
Paul Gill replaces Eric Grothe - LOL.
Wasn't funny at the time though.

I think there were about 30 French school kids on an exchange, tipped up to see Eric and got Paul Gill and Wally Fullerton-Smith. Who I think had one of his better games. Given he was an Aussie international, was very disappointed. A very poor man's Delaney for mine. Did lots of tackling but had nothing else

Dean Bell was supposed to be coming back but didn't. Graham Lowe didn't want Kiwi internationals coming to England, well, not until he went to Wigan anyway. Then of course Bell appeared at Wigan and hence the chants of "Judas" whenever he played against us.

| The nickname thing was something that added to the exotic nature of Aussies back then. They all had nicknames when they came over - Whizz, Joe Cool (Dorahy), Guru etc etc. Seems a bit laughable and ridiculously contrived looking back. Especially when they didn't play much like their nickname (Steve Martin really wasn't much of a Whizz). The only nicknames I remember being chanted for English players tended to be ironic - "Diamond" Dave Creasser, Andy "Killer" Smith or just daft (Roy "Cozy" Powell).

When David "Cement" Gillespie came over to play for Hunslet, Dave Heron, in all seriousness, declared that from now he'd like to be called "Concrete". It didn't catch on for him, but the first rule of nicknames is you can't choose your own.
