Is money from the play off gate receipts not split between all the competing teams? I guess this could cause some problems with almost giving tickets away with a season ticket

39110_1363272058.jpg Dropkick Murphy..we actually saw and heard a mass of bouncing and scarf and flag waving to Dale Cavese that drowned out anything we could muster.. It stopped us singing our own celebratory songs, it died out seconds later when we accepted we couldn't be heard over the Wigan lot
Celebrations muted from us, job done from them. Most fans who slag them off are jealous their own club's support is nowhere near that good

sally cinnamon..Why not discuss Wigan? It's a rugby league message board. Wigan are the most famous brand in rugby league

It is a big 'event' gets lots of people interested, even those that dont go. Some will go for just one match, others will then 'hooked' some will come along with friends. Some will get 'hooked' and bring friends to the next game. Even those who just go to the 'event' match once a year might start identifying as a leeds fan, maybe buy a shirt, watch on sky, go to a cc final.
Thats why we would do it. Not as a money making excercise in itself.'"
I didn't know a bit of common sense was allowed on RLfans anymore
I think money could be made of it as a one off but as you say more importantly it is about attracting people and wanting them to come back. It brings loads of added publicity and if the fans get behind it, it could be a huge yearly event for the city. Leeds take 30k+ to the GF at Old Trafford, many of those are not fans who will go on a regular basis but they will attend a one off big game, maybe they will see what they have been missing and go to more games and buy merchandise.
Thinking carefully about this, if common sense was used, this could not fail in such a RL stronghold. It isn't exactly the same as taking a Quins RL game next door is it? This works in RU and it will work in RL especially for one of the games biggest clubs.
I can't see a strong argument to not do this and I would hope the club look into these things. If I ever see GH I will definantly suggest it to him! As well as telling him to shut his trap in the media
Well done on the win tonight by the way pains me to say!

| I can see why this is an interesting idea with Elland Rd been a bigger ground etc, Sale got C17,000 for their game at Bolton with is x3 more than normal at home.
Two issues with floating fans.
Leeds Utd get a lot of out of town support from places like Cas and Wakefield. These people would not be seen dead at a Rhinos game. Also, many Leeds Utd fans I know are Anti Ken Bates and would see attending such a match as putting money in his pocket.

| Just to fuel the argument.....
Wasps v Bath got a crowd of 38k today at Twickenham...
Neither of these teams have an average as high as Bradford and Leeds and neither team is located as close to the stadium itself.
IT WORKS.

A few points:
1) Elland Road doesn't have the same draw for League fans as Twickenham does for Union fans.
2) How many of those tickets were given away or sold at a massively reduced price?
3) How much does it cost to play at Twickenham & how much would it cost at Elland Road?
4) A union game, well advertised around the London area, on a day like today could I guess gain passing interest from a number of people who woudln't normally attend. Playing a game 5 miles down the road in a football ground is just going to attract the same old people.
This is a non starter until a day when we can sell out Headingley on a regular basis for these fixtures

| Quote: Andy R "A few points
I agree with your first point but Elland Road has a bigger draw than Headingley in the city, that is the point.
They probably were at a reduced price, that is the point, it must be done and you need a bigger capacity to do it to achieve the same amount of revenue. We have cheaper tickets for our 'big one'.
The cost of renting the stadium for the day would be outweighed by the publicity and future sales you could recieve from this kind of event game.
Regardless of the people in London Leeds need to attract the 30k or so who go to the GF when they get there or went to Wembley last year or attended the WCC at ER (all of which have more expensive tickets and/or were further away).
I can't believe you can be so negative as a Leeds fan about this idea. You could probably have a tenner a ticket and attract 20k fans before even marketing the game to all the RL clubs in the area and all the other sports clubs and local businesses.
You knocked my argument about it working in London but it also works for us in Wigan. It worked for Sale moving to Botlon. It would work in Leeds.
Finally it is the kind of thing that may only get just over 25k the first time round but it would gather momentum for future years. People would see how good it could be. Everyone was talking about it in Wigan when we first played Leeds in that game, thousands of people had stickers on their cars etc.
I study marketing and it works, especially when demand is already there.

I love the fact that a lot of your argument is based around the fact that you got a big crowd, in your usual stadium, for a big game after selling tickets for a tenner. Why not try going to a bigger football ground and selling more?
If we want a bigger crowd we can do all the marketing for Headingley, keep the matchday revenue and lose the outgoings to LUFC. That would be the same scenario you are talking about at Wigan.

Your first point is not exactly valid because the point I am making is that the marketing works.
Us moving to a big football stadium is not exactly the same because we don't have one in the area. Going to Manchester is very different to Leeds fans staying in the same place.
Your debate while maybe the risk free one... it has no vision or desire to make the sport bigger and better than it is now. The fact a RL fan would decline the chance to get a huge crowd on with tonnes of publicty sums up our sport in a nutshell.

I still have reservations about whether it would work. I'm still not sure the Magic weekend works that well - I cetainly don't think it attracts many new fans. Perhaps your idea of taking SL on the road to other grounds could replace that?

I am certain it would work. The proof is in other events, not only from other places in the country but Leeds itself. Leeds have already attracted 35k+ to the stadium previously for the WCC, that was without away fans and with much more expensive tickets.
ALL events get a bigger attendance when marketed well.
I am a fan of the magic weekend personally, it is a shame the RL public don't support it because I always have a great time, I only missed the first one and have loved them all since. It is a unique event in world sport and it would work if RL fans would get off their s.
The only problem I have with it is that it can be damaging publicity due to the empty seats.
It has now been decided it will be played as the first round from now on but having the derbys as the first game in their regular locations would draw even bigger crowds.
If we played Saints first game of the season at home it would be an instant sell-out as would Leeds v Bradford and Hull v Hull KR and the other games would get bigger gates than usual so I can't help but think the clubs are missing out on extra revenue.
Could you see this idea working if Leeds played Bradford in the first game of the season at Elland Road? The fans would have been starved of RL for months...

Maybe.
Maybe I'm just selfish but I'd much rather watch the game, any game, at Headingley.
The World CLub Challenge is different, people view it as a Cup Final. Tickets aren't that expensive and there are usually a lot of offers flying around.
Leeds / Bradford will never be as big a game as Wigan / Saints either - don't forget that
