fair enough. in union its an automatic scrum whether or not the attacking team gains an advantage. prefer that to be honest as it stops any crappy ref judgement about whether an advantage is gained. Bit of a marmite argument i suppose

I presumed that was your angle of approach from your question.
I prefer the League ruling allowing discretion to the official. If no-one is impeded I don't see the need to stop the game.
One rule I'd consider taking from Union though is returning the ball to where it is kicked if it goes dead from distance.

Anything outside the 20 it goes back to where it was kicked, otherwise a tap 20 as now.
It's something I mentioned to GCH t'other week, after Clarkey spent most of the Saints Wigan game banging on about Wigan kicking it dead all the time. At least that way you reward the skill, kicking, but don't penalise the defensive team by having them get the ball 5 metres from their own line.

seems a good ploy. I think its a very easy option, for a kicker to take, but there is still skill involved in getting enough power whilst missing the fullback and wingers

Good tactic used by Leeds in Many games!!

Exactly, it's reducing the flair element of the game. We, as a code, have a long tradition of altering our game in an attempt to improve it for the watching spectator.

It's nothing new. I was doing it 20 years ago.

Now and again Clarke's scattergun approach will hit the mark and it struck a chord with me.
On a similar issue, having a line drawn marking the middle of the twenty for re-starts is a no-brainer, so why hasn't that been adopted yet?
Lee Briers took the p[iis[/is the other week with one.
