Agree completely. As a coach you have to always have that as the priority. Not everyone does, and there aren't many parents who get this. A winning mentality comes from confidence in your performance, not being so comeptitive and fired up that you burst into tears and storm off every time you drop the ball or lose a game (we have a couple of those, as I suspect does every team). And certainly not being told by coaches that you're useless if you make a mistake during a game and lose (can't count how many times I've heard this).
We have to transition to new rules this year and start playing real rugby, the kids have so much to learn, yet we have coaches at our club who just want to coach their age groups in "winning" rather than getting skills developed. There are many other clubs we play who have the same attitude. Part of it is there is real competition for the better kids and parents tend to like their kids in winning teams.
I've written this year off (I just haven't told the press ), I just don't care what the results are, I want the kids to learn right. We will win plenty though, we have some terrific kids.

| Quote Remarkable_Rhinos="Remarkable_Rhinos"I'm actually, genuinely, hoping we get thumped on Friday.
If we manage to scrape a win, it would be solely down to the players playing their hearts out, and probably a few lucky calls, and nothing to do with McDermott's coaching ability. Were we to win, it would simply paper over any cracks and give McDermott a few more weeks/months grace. Losing is better in the long term.
As much as I'd love to beat Wigan, it would be short term satisfaction, and we'd wake up Saturday morning with McDermott still in charge. A heavy loss is the better result for the good of the team.
Deadly serious.'"
BMD won't get fired or kept on as a result of what happens tomorrow night. I want us to stuff the Goons.

You can't have it both ways.
If we lose it's his fault and if we win it has nothing to do with him? That doesn't stack up at all.
Even if we lose 70-0 Mac will still be at the training ground come Monday morning. So I'd change tact in wanting us to get stuffed.
I'd like to see us win, amazing that ain't it.
It would be nice to see Leeds playing their heart out. But they are putting a shift in terms of effort, they are just falling well short on the application. With a shaky coach behind them it isn't going to be of much help.

Talking sense in the face of tery.
Typical Bloodbath.
Maybe McDermott senses the players are putting too much pressure on themselves and wants to lift some of that by making it clear that they are underdogs for this game (which they are, by some distance - any Leeds fan who doesn't genuinely believe that wants their head testing).

| McMuppet is a clueless moron and shouldn't be let anywhere near the media. Once again I've had to endure ridicule for being a Leeds fan... from a Bulls fan???
He said "we might be playing s*it at the moment but at least our coach isn't making a tit of himself on national TV."

I, with a glass half full mentality, would hope that was the train of thought Mac was tapping into. But if we're talking about application or failure of application - Mac being interviewed is always a bomb. Always a painful experience to watch!! (shudder)

Let's be fair here - Tony Smith was hardly a model of eloquence and personality in front of the cameras, particularly when things weren't going well.
As has been pointed out, it wasn't unknown for him to make similar comments to the media either.

I agree with him. I'm not going to Wigan either, expecting a win or otherwise.
I'm off to the pub expecting you to buy my beer all night. More chance of a Leeds win I guess.
