I agree, there is more than a coach can do, we need a long term plan, but a good man at the top can help paper over a few cracks, whilst the major redevelopment is done behind the scenes

True, so long as that's what happens. Too often a high profile coach could paper over the cracks, while the RFL stand around looking shifty, whistling in an unconvincing attempt to look nonchalant and saying "What cracks? We can't see any cracks."

Before we need a coach, we need to select or produce a quality three-quarter line that can defend and attack with power and speed.

If Ellery Hanley could be talked out of retirement I would suggest that he would do a great job as Development Coach as he is fantastic role model for the younger players coming up through the ranks. His achievements as a players are 2nd to none in both the English & Australian games. His dedication to the game and can instruct the players on general life decisions which will help them prolong their career beyong their international days. It should also be noted that he has top level coaching experience having won the Super League as a coach with St Helens.

As far as coaching experience is concerned Hanley already has a win against the Australian Test team on his CV which is more than some can boast.

I can't see the attraction for any current SL coaches.

Why would you go from having the opportunity to work with a bunch of players on a daily basis, developing them into what you hope will be a competitive unit and building a new game plan every week for different opposition to getting five games a year where you're the underdog for most of them and your playing staff is inferior to the opposition?

It's one of the biggest poisoned chalices in British sport. The expectation is that you can make a silk purse out of a sow's ear and you'll be roundly villified if you don't.
