His quality was my inferred point. He wasn't always a calamity as some presume.

Medley won more medals at Leeds than Dixon. They were very different players so it's hard to compare or say one was "better". Dixon, old school tough as teak backrower. Medley, prototype modern day lightning fast backrower. I know who I'd want next to me in a scrap (Dixon) but if I wanted someone to win a game out of nothing only Medley could do that. Off then bench Medley could change a game. Dixon could tough it out with the best for 80mins. As someone said, you should've kept both and kept big Roy too - another who Leeds let go before they should.

Bradford got good years out of all three.

If I was picking a team in the modern game, when athleticism is more of a factor and you have a four man interchange bench with ten changes, then I'd take Medley.

With the game as it was in the late 80s and early 90s, where forwards needed to be able to do close on the full 80 and have a higher workrate, that suited Dixon much more than it did Medley.

To an extent, Medley was ahead of his time but I can see why he may not have endeared himself to some coaches.

Entirely with you on Powell though, probably my favourite Leeds player of that era

Dixon was a good all-round forward and probably the best I've ever seen at stealing the ball in the tackle. The rule change on that took away half his game.

We could have had all the backrowers in the world in that era and still gone nowhere because (apart from a few months of Craig Coleman) they never had a scrum-half to run off or back them up. If we'd have signed Deryck Fox instead of Ray Ashton it would have been a different story...

I remember him as much for bombing the simplest of tries by dropping the simplest of catches when Bradford played at Hull FC then I do for that try he scored for us. Why we re-signed him I do not know.

Nor Marcus St Hilaire.

Bradford certainly saw the best years of Medley's career, as others have said he was a forward who could really change a game and one in hindsight we were wrong to release.

Big Roy was one that i think most Leeds fans at the time were unhappy with.He was a seasoned GB international by the time he left and still only 26 with plenty still to offer.Iirc Dixon fell foul of Laughton's revolution but was always one of my favourite players growing up through that era.Bradford certainly got good value out of all three players.

Dave Heron was another good one we got,classy player, would of liked him 5 years earlier though

If you get a chance check out Medley's workrate in the match I mentioned, phenomenal. And he hit like a runaway train.
Only back row forward I've ever seen score direct from fielding a kick off, and he did it more than once. Spectacularly at Wigan one night in a mid week game.

Dixon had a great offload - for me he was a front row forward (his best GB appearances were there next to big Roy), he had the hands and that great one handed round the corner offload.

The consequences of having revolving door policy on coaches and players is sometimes lost on the more recent generation of supporters (not their fault I suppose). A revolving door has the habit of hitting you in the ar$e if you use it often enough.

I remember a tale told a while ago by Dave Hadfield about Paul Dixon.

Paul Dixon and an unnamed teammate are getting changed after a game and discussing their recent selection for the GB touring team. The unnamed one turns to Dixon and says “Have you asked your wife if she’s ok about you being picked for the Lions tour?” (the about 6-8 weeks long)
Dixon, looks incredulously at the inquirer “No, she doesn’t have a lot of say to be honest.”

Quick question , wasn't Dixon one of many who gave up when the game went full-time pro due to outside work commitments ? might be way off the mark , just interested .

Well he had a dairy farm so that might have had something to do with it. Karl Fairbank was the same.
