Maybe I exaggerated a little (I have been known to do that), but there is very obvious anti-European sentiment and the film is really made for an American audience first.

Summary of some things here. However, there are other references, the food the girl orders that Cruise claims isn't really food (it's European), the lines of US flags, the foreign invaders (what -from Europe?), the very fact that they end up in Boston and the statue of Paul Revere is where the first sign of the alien fungus dying.
There was an interesting discussion when the film came out on Newsnight Review. There were other things you wouldn't notice unless you had them pointed out - but Spielberg isn't a crude filmaker so not surprising.
None of that was a reason why I didn't like the film though. I thought it lacked any real scale and lost pace in the cellar segment (the paranoia thing just didn't work. The the ending where they all meet up at Grandma's made me want to puke.
Have you seen Watchmen? I seem to remeber you were keen a while back. I only ask because it's a massive effort for me to get to the cinema - with work and the kids (no available babysitters). Is it worth the effort?

Hey, I agree on some points (especially the ending) but I get annoyed at the claims that it is an inferior remake of a classic. Some people will just turn their nose up at enything new.
Oh, and speaking of anti-European, I caught some of the fantastically bad 'Red Dawn' on Virgin One last night. There's a cracking bit where they ask if the filthy commie backstabbers have invaded Europe too. No, they are told, and Europe has decided to stay out of this one. He guesses that two in one centruy is enough for them (except for England, oddly enough, although he doesn't think we'll last too long. No mention of Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland).

In fairness I thought the original was one of the less memorable 50's sci-fi offerings, Spielberg certainly beats that.

The season starts in October. Until then, don't panic!: |
|
| Sat down with wife and kids today to watch 'Beverley Hills Chihuahua'
It really is as bad as it sounds, and we turned it off and watched 'Bolt' (again) instead
Don't let your kids even think about watching it!!!!!

You would never catch me with one of those childish signatures: |
|
| The Da Vinci code was tosh unlike the book, the prequel comes out in a couple of weeks, Angels & Demons, early reviews say its even worse than the Da Vinci code. For Blockbusters this summer, Christian Bale has 3 must see movies.

F*cking must have been! Jesus that film is boring. Eyes bleeding dry boring. And they weren't even vampires! They didn't have the weird looking facial features and I can't remember seeing much fang action. It was utter, utter, utterutter down in the gutter S-H-I-T-E.

I watched Mark Kermode's review and it was scathing. I'm in two minds now. It's one of those films that could easily be messed up badly.'"
Yep. 3 hours of utter crap. apart from a couple of decent fight scenes. I expected it have more action (not sexual by the way ) but the film never gets going. felt really let down. I was walking out with my missus and 4 or 5 people who i could here behind me were fuming at how bad it was..
