| Quote: tvoc "As Offiah wasn't on the track and Bolt wasn't on a rugby pitch it's hard to assess the validity of your claim.
If Offiah's intercept was in the last minute where would Bolt be then?
A competitor in that race (ran the 100 in 10 flat) had a trial with Castleford but didn't look much like a rugby player or a sprinter that afternoon.'"
OK that's a bit of a pedantic reply but I'll humour you,
my calculations are based on what Martin Offiah says was his fastest 100mtr time and that was then set against Bolts world record.
If you were asking me whether I think Bolt is a better rugby league player than Martin Offiah then the obvious answer is no but this discussion was about speed.

Your example placed the comparison on a rugby pitch not on the track.
On the track Bolt wouldn't break sweat to beat Offiah.
I remember Keith Fielding in Superstars up against Edwin Moses, no contest and Moses wasn't in Bolt's class over 100mt.

| Quote: BrisbaneRhino "Sorry to go OT, but the defication of Bradman annoys me - probably cos I live in Aus. fact is, he never played outside Australia or England. He also never faced a relentless bowling attack. During the infamous Bodyline series England really only had three quick bowlers. of those only Larwood was genuinely quick, and a hell of a lot of overs in every test in those days were bowled by the likes of Wally Hammond - nice gentle medium pace whilst mainline bowlers took a break. I'm not arguing he was the best ever, but I suspect had he been around and faced the Windies 75-85 (especially pre 1 bouncer per over) his stats would have looked rather poorer to say the least.
Anyway, back on topic, Bolt is just a joy to watch.'"
Didn't Bradman bat entirely on uncovered pitches? That's pretty impressive even taking into account less testing bowling.

| Nevermind Bolt. Did anyone see Bakele in the 10,000 metres last night.
He's a pure machine.
Some of the other distances in Athletics don't have many "stars" nowadays. (Men and Womens 800 and 1500 spring to to mind). Thankgoodness for Bolt and Bakele (oh and Jess Ennis )

He's got nothing to achieve in his "two events" now.

He mentioned about the 400m towards the end of his career because it's too demanding for him at this Stage of his career...

And he says he felt tired before the race and didn't run well!
I reckon he can go faster at 200m - traditionally the 200m world record is a bit less than twice the 100m record - that would suggest Bolt should run around 19.1 (and probably sub 19 seconds )

| 100m:
Bolt covered the distance in 42 strides.
If my maths is right (and it often isn't) that equates to almost 8 feet per stride and probably somewhere over 9 once he hits full speed (bearing in mind his strides would've been much shorter after the start).
Astounding.

| How long before another athlete of this standard comes along - there must be a limit to mechanically how fast the human body can actually run?

What are they doing over there? They're filming something. They're filming midgets!
Maybe that's what hell is, the entire rest of eternity spent in f*cking Bruges
Ken: You from the States?
Jimmy: Yeah. But don't hold it against me.
Ken: I'll try not to... Just try not to say anything too loud or crass.
Ken: Ray, you are about the worst tourist in the whole world.
Ray: Ken, I grew up in Dublin. I love Dublin. If I grew up on a farm, and was retarded, Bruges might impress me but I didn't, so it doesn't.: |

Average stride for many athletes who run longer distances is around 9 feet, sprinters have to make sure they don't over-stride as this reduces their speed. Bolt is so fast because he can maintain high leg speed and a larger than average stride. It was bound to happen that a freakish tall guy with that leg speed would come along - he's it.
Amazing is definately the word (and clean as well - unlike FloJo who did similar things in Womens sprinting).
