Huh, your joking right? The original was far better, the remake was a typical hollywood effort. What was the point of the love story with Julia Roberts and why did they get away with it at the end? The original ending was far better.

The original [icould[/i have been better, but Sinatra's insistence on partying till the early hours and refusing to take direction lead to a poorly made film.

I thought Oceans 11 (the remake) was quite good.
Never seen the sequels though!

Have to agree to disagree. I thought Sinatras attitude helped to give it that cool 60's feel in the same way that Michael Caine did in his films, even though I don't think either of them are particularly good actors or Caine wasn't at the time. It still really annoys me that they changed the ending, didn't see the need for it.

Probably so they could make millions on the sequels!

I agree he gave it 60's cool, but it's still a poor film, in my opinion.
I suppose we'll have to agree to differ unless we can decide on a definition for what is a 'good' film.

| I've always said there will be an Ace Ventura 3. With Jim Carey again. I've always said that and I'm sticking by it. I also said 5 years ago that Eminem will die in 2009.

| We all know that most 50s US Sci-fi films are just an excuse to get them there Commies past the Censors ... Call 'em Aliens and we're assured of getting it past them.
Of course, the definative version of W O T W isn't even a film
The 50s one did exactly what it said on the tin, whilst the Cruise vehicle had a load of glaring plot faults.
- A fully loaded jumbo jet lands on the house they're all hiding in. No bodies and the house not that damaged
- What was with the kid screaming every 5 minutes
The best bit of tension was the Tim Robbins slightly insane cellar scene, but when they finally got to Boston in the end, conclusive proof that Martians will only kill working class people. Whilst the posh bits of Boston suffered the horror of having a couple of bins knocked over by rampaging forces from outer space ....

I agreed with your earlier point that the best version of the story is not even a film.
I know the answer to this, its the bleedin obvious answer, but why do American film makers have to do remakes of any "non-American" film and set them in America ?
Surely the American audience aren't so shallow as to actually understand that there is life beyond their own country ?
Like I said, the answer is the bleedin obvious one.

OK, so you've listed two 'glaring plot faults' (btw, there are bodies in the crashed plane). The kid screaming is hardly plot point. If she didn't it might be. I'll even chuck you in another one for free, i.e. his son surviving after going over the hill. That was daft.
We know you dislike the Cruise film. Fair enough. Now tell us what is so brilliant about the 50's film, other than it was made a long time ago?

For example, watch any film that cuts to a scene overseas and they'll have a subtitle - "Paris, France" or "London, England". I'd imagine that only the Americans need to be told that Paris is in France and London is in England etc.
