| What Billy Thompson fails to mention in that interview is that if he were refereeing that game, even if he'd jumped in a time machine and still been in his prime, he would have been as unsighted as Ganson was, mainly because Billy Thompson in his prime would not be fit enough to keep up with play these days.
If he doesn't shut up I may have to put into print that story about what he was doing in the players bar late one night in the 1970s

| Quote: Tricky Dicky "Sorry but i have to pick up on this. Compare these figures as a percentage per head of population.
We leave you standing.
Leeds is a big city, Wigan just a small town. Put this in context.'"
Go back and read pages 19 and 20 of the thread and you will see the context.
Quote: Tricky Dicky "You just get on worrying about the geriatric Leeds side. We're doing o.k.at Wigan. Not only have we knocked you off the top of the League ladder, we've also gone top of the home average attendance figures.
Not bad for a small town in Lancashire eh?
Now if you had a premiership football club in your city, you may find even more competition for spectators.'"
Quote: Tricky Dicky "According to slstats we are still top? even if we are not your home attendances are helped with a big slice by Saints and Wire but well done to Wigan all the same.
AFAIR we were still top of attendances when we had a champions league team?'"
As I said I know nothing about football but I do have the odd RL stat if it helps.
Wigan in my experience have always been a big draw but if you want a per head of population comparison I wonder how they would stack up against Featherstone? Especially when they were both in the same division.

| Ah, Billy Thompson - if you ever wanted an unbiased opinion on all matters concerning Leeds you could always rely on Billy not to provide it, even when he was out in the middle...

Sadly, yes.
Back in the days before referees had to be able to do things like keep up with the game, when knock ons and forward passes were commonly "seen" and used as an excuse to stop the game for a minute.

| Quote: DoubleAone "Very dissapointing in fact
First off the initial commentators are totally inaccurate describing it as a "late tackle" .. what a laugh it coudnt be late. Tomkons caught the ball Ablett was perfectly entitled to tackle him.
The old ref isnt any better describing it as an "elbow to the face" again totally inaccurate.
Ganson was perfectly correct in putting it on report and the charge which was also correct as it was a reckless tackle and the forearm came in contact with the head but not deliberate and without malice.
Grow up son you really must do better 3/10'"
Good points and probably fair result.

| Billy Thompson has two claims to fame.
1) Being hoodwinked by Alex Murphy into sending Syd Hynes off in the '71 Challenge Cup final and making history in doing so
and even worse IIRC
2) Pulling GB up for a non existent obstruction that cost Steve Pitchford a try in the World Cup Final in Sydney 1977. A game Australia won 13 - 12

My favourite for that was a game away at Oldham. A long break was made, from one twenty metre area to the other, and resluted in ascrum for some reason. It was formed and fed very quickly, but John Holdsworth made them do it again for some non-existant reason, as he was blowing like a steam train from the run back.
