| Quote mattsrhinos1978="mattsrhinos1978"INOUTHe's a solid, no nonsense prop with over 100 NRL games, bit of a down year last season in his first year with the sharks but was good for the Tigers before his move, averaged over 9m a carry over his last 3 seasons with them and when the sharks announced his signing there coach referenced him being a good defender and him making very few errors. 27 year old , 6ft 2 and nearly 18 stone. Not a star but a solid NRL prop'"
“Solid NRL prop” is what we need. Kylie did okay.
We need someone who is consistently high performing. Would prefer more of a star player at prop ideally but...
To be honest as well, we probably need a good prop more than any other side in SL, so if Cats have got Kasiano why are they outbidding Leeds?

Who knows...have catalans got any marquee spots left? Maybe we just havnt got the cap to fit someone like kasiano under. Theres plenty of NRL props who would do a very good job for us who arnt stars, Garbutt and Fifita wernt big names, just have to pick the right one and hope they settle, which is always a gamble even with the bigger name recruits coming over. Fingers crossed, if we do bring someone over we get it right, cant afford another Peteru/Achurch on a 3 year contract, probably on a decent wedge.

I remember reading something last year that suggested there was a loophole that Catalans were exploiting. the British teams have their salary cap in GBP. Catalan's salary cap is in euros and it was set at at the time when the GBP to euro exchange rate was 1.45. Due to brexit uncertainty the GBP to euro rate is very low (less than 1.17 meaning that their cap in euros is now worth over £200k a year more so they can sign an extra top class player on £4k a week than anybody else - I think that's how they've got Kasiano in. the rules need to change to reflect the exchange rate at the beginning of the season, not based on an exchange rate from years ago

I don’t really have a problem with Cats having a higher cap TBH; they are a development team and have all the travel to account for etc. You’re right though that their cap should be indexed correctly in principle.
We have a lot of cap coming off in 2020; I believe there is more than enough for a Kasiano but yes possibly not enough for this year.
I hope Ava does come because structurally it would improve Leeds. It could keep Merrin in the BR and relegate Sutcliffe to bench or out of the 17.
We need someone who can take the pressure off young Oledzski.

| The Catalans are now more than established as a SL Club & should be under the exact SC rules as everyone else.
Wrt to Kasiano he's another Dave Taylor huge potential but doesnt have the heart or attitude to sustain his impact longer term.

You may be right re. Kasiano. We probably need a more consistent type player, we have enough rocks & diamonds types.
The cap is a bit of a joke when you start introducing Marquees etc; clubs will already be spending vastly different amounts on wages. We don’t even know for deffo if the exchange thing is real or current - but it’s not a really level playing field anyway. Another concept RL couldn’t stick with for more than a few years, like licensing.
End of the day it will be good to have a player of this profile and quality in SL.

I’m not a Rhinos supporter but I was surprised to see the news of Kasiano’s signing by Catalan.
With the Leeds team in a rebuilding phase and prop being a position of importance during that rebuild, I would have thought you’d have done whatever it takes to bring him to Headingley.
Even in a rebuild phase, Leeds must surely be a better bet for stability and a shot at the bigger games than the Dragons.
Kasiano’s a New Zealander so he’ ll be used to bad weather removing the sunshine of Catalan as a factor in his decision.
Have Leeds missed a trick here, a 3 year deal for a top class 28 year old prop. These opportunities don’t come along too often

The exchange thing isn't real. I have no doubt their accounts and cap will be in Euros, and therefore needs a set rate, but it is a long time since a rate of 1.45 would have been deemed correct.
IF anything they will have been at a disadvantage on that score.

| He was a name that was mentioned a few times but Furner immediately shut it down in a press conference the other week. No idea if we even had discussions with him but would be surprised if there wasnt at least an initial enquiry.

| Exactly what we needed in my view, but prepared to be proven wrong when he has a terrible season for the Catalans and we sign someone better......
