| Toughness was different in those days were a punch wouldn’t necessarily get you sent off and head high tackles were almost routine

Saw Roy Dickinson get in a fight and knock Les Gorley out at HQ during one particularly bad tempered game against Widnes (which is saying something). Gorley was stretchered off and I think Roy was given a stern talking to. I seem to remember the first thing Kevin Dick used to do when we played Widnes was punch Andy Gregory. Dick was not the most gifted half back but he could make anyone playing against him have a stinker - even did it to Peter Sterling when he was at Hull. Mostly by thumping them at every opportunity.
The introduction of the 10 minute sin bin hardly helped as nobody got sent off at all for fighting.

| Brian McTigue, nobody messed with him. I was on a supporters tour to Aus with Alex Murphy and he said McTigue was the toughest he had ever played with or against.
Tommy Leuluai must be a good shout from the modern era.

| I was at the Widnes game dhm remembers. Gorley and Prescott spent the whole game high tackling our playmakers until Roy ended it. The only other punch I saw Roy throw broke John Dalgrern's jaw vs Fulham.
Incidentally the Widnes game was Roy Powell's debut.

| Many years ago I saw a video of Jim Mills playing for GB v Aus, I think 1978. Jim was bitten in the tackle by Rod Reddy; Jim nutted the Rocket & snotted him on the way down. No other Aussie intervened. Penalty to GB.

Best performance I ever saw by Mills. I only caught the last few years of his career by which time he was a bit panto but he was fearsome in that odsal test.

| Rob Burrow, smallest player on the pitch, never backed away from anything, including Epalahame Lauaki.

Yeah, Rob Burrow definitely the toughest for me. Never backed down, got knocked out few times, always came back.
So sad

| I'm gonna be a killjoy on this one.
It's impossible to compare players from different eras as so much changes so quickly these days. People will rightly point out people like Artie and Mal R as tough players but you just don't know how they would have fared in the modern game where players are so much fitter and TV cameras etc.. are everywhere.
For me, anybody that gets on a rugby pitch and then comes back to do it all again the week after is pretty dang tough.

Take your point and for that reason I wouldn't include the likes of Kelvin Skerrett or Les Boyd. Reilly was a different animal though. Could and would dish out the dark stuff when needed but when unprovoked just played the game with unremitting but fair physicality. Would have excelled both then and now. I'd rate Adrian Morley and Gaz Ellis too in terms of hardness.
