Quote: gulfcoast_highwayman "To extend a debate currently taking place on ITV teletext music letters page, who do you think counts as the band of the Noughties?

It's hard to speak of one band who really defined the decade, or even two or three.

Girls Aloud is about the closest, or maybe the White Stripes.'"
The Killers or Muse, Arctic Monkeys could be in with a shout depending on this year's album. Probably would have been The Libertines if they had been around longer, or The Strokes or Kings of Leon if their earlier work had been more popular.

But so many bands have started very strongly (Killers, Arctics) but have pretty much failed to really kick on from there.

It may be the nature of the fractured music business. Long term crossover appeal is required for me if a band are to be mentioned in any discussion about 'defining band of the decade'. I just don't think any guitar band has really done that.

...recently.

Its a well known phenominum in the music business - band spend three or four years together living in each others pockets, writing songs and bumming gigs whenever and wherever - finally get noticed and signed for a one record deal at which point the publishers listen to the whole of their repetoire and pick the best 10 or 12 songs to make an album leaving behind the cr@p that they've written along the way.

Album is a best seller and suddenly the publishers are interested in another one, in the meantime said band have been on the road promoting to death and have not written anything new in the last twelve months due to gigging every night of the week - second album has a very short production cycle and as a result contains all the cr@p that was rejected for the first album.

Band splits shortly after second album is a flop.

The only ones who get five album deals are the ones who can demonstrate a huge catalogue of work at the first meeting.

PS - those "million dollar album deals" don't exist either

Good point, I remember when Artic Monkeys released a 5 song LP after there debut album came out to cash in on there sudden fame, which was utter garbage.

You'll notice not many bands that have been around this decade have lasted, or anyone takes much notice of them anymore. Franz Ferdinand are still popular though.

Seems that older bands or ones around in the 90's still get better album sales then recent bands albums do

Nobody's taken any notice of Arctic Monkeys because they haven't done anything for a year. It's been the Last Shadow Puppets. Their 2 albums have been 2 of the best albums this decade, the first selling record amounts in its first week, that is until Leona and Cowell came along. There's never been one spare ticket for any of the gigs they've played since becoming signed. I'm not saying that they're band of the decade, but to say that they haven't lasted, or that nobody takes any notice of them anymore is unfair, IMO.

Coldplay is an obvious name being overlooked.

An argument could be made for Coldplay being band of the decade. But I personnally think they're cack.

If the Libertines had still been together it would be them hands down

I enjoyed 'The Age Of The Understatement', I wasn't really a fan of Kane to be honest, but his team-up with Turner has worked. 'Standing Next To Me' and most of the album is bursting with, breezy, summer freshness. It's very much a nod to the 60's so can hardly be deemed as original, but musically its a neat left turn from their day jobs.
