| Quote: Andy Gilder "Seating configurations don't create atmosphere. Fans create atmosphere. There will still be 7,000 people in that stand on a weekly basis. I'm not sure where this idea comes from that anyone who sits down at a sporting event is immediately rendered mute?
I've been in plenty of all-seater stadia with incredible atmospheres for big games (the old Highbury, Valley Parade, Old Trafford etc) so it's nonsense to suggest that if people have their backsides on a seat somehow it will kill it.'"
Because by the looks of this thread most fans talk out of their so making them sit down will render them mute.

For example the Championship finals day a few back held at the Halliwell Jones. A small fire broke out inside one of the stand and they had to empty the fans onto the pitch. Given a similar situation at a new Leeds South Stand I doubt the preferred setup would be a load of standing fans rushing down onto a seated section.

Is it not more a case that if you are low down and sat down your view isn't great. Standing on the lower part still affords at worst a reasonable view.
I don't think it is a h&s issue so much.

| My initial thoughts that we should keep the whole of the South Stand as a terrace but am now convinced that this is the right way forward. From what I have read the standing capacity in the new stand will be the same as the existing and decrepit South Stand, so there is absolutely no reason why the atmosphere should change. Plus, and this is an important point, the atmosphere at somewhere like Valley Parade in Bradford, which is all seating, has been incredible at the big games over recent years. I know this as a fact as, by an accident of birth and my dear departed parents' sporting loves, I regularly attend games at both Headingley and Valley Parade.
Let's stop moaning and get right behind our club bringing HQ into the 21st century.

| Those who think the atmopshere will be the same once the dwellers move in should try going to any one of our aways.
2/3rds of the fans sat down, never getting off their and rarely raising their voice. Left to the 100 or so who stand at the back to make up for it.
I think what's already been alluded to is spot on - you'll have families with screaming kids in the back who'll immediately demand the atmosphere get calmed down so as not to offend their little darlings.
I like going to the rugby and being able to call Silverwood a bent, inbred, sh*tforbrains thunderc*nt when he screws up a call.

Oh then that is a good argument for more seating

I assume you're just trying to be funny, though failing because if you're being serious then I very much doubt you are a 'fan' that the club would want to retain anyway.
Your views are, in my humble opinion, outdated and neanderthal. It would be perhaps better all-round if you picked up another sport.

I can't believe this.
Granny, when did you find out how to use the Internet?

| So the primary objection now is "I'll be near families and they won't want to hear me swearing my head off for 80 minutes"?
Oooh, good argument for the club denying itself some revenue that.

| It looks like the new proposals are going to give you all the best of both worlds and you should count yourself lucky that you've got the money to invest and bring the stadium up to modern day standards. At least you'll have the freedom of choice and will hopefully recreate the lively atmosphere within the standing section. Who knows, even the fans in the seats may well spend most of the match stood up and contributing to the noise!
Come to Huddersfield and enjoy the sterile atmosphere of a large empty stadium despite the efforts of a few passionate groups spread around who try (often falling on their a+se) to get the crowd going. Probably the reason why I enjoy our away games so much!
Before any of you current Loiners have a go, I feel that I'm fairly well qualified to comment having been a Leeds season ticket holder and ever-present in the Southstand for 10 years plus from the early 90's (both home and away).
I can appreciate the views and comments made by others regarding the antiquated state of the current South Stand, getting there earlier to ensure getting in and the definite deterioration of the general atmosphere and language etc over recent years which is possibly down to new so called fans drifting in due to the mixed fortunes (decline!?) of LUFC. This was the primary reason I'm now at Huddersfield - there was no way that I could subject my young son to such a volatile atmosphere when he took an interest in RL but opted for the comfort and safety of our own seat every week!
I'll always have fond memories of the old days in South Stand 3, but surely it's time your club moved on!

| I heard just as much, if not more swearing in the south stand when I was a kid than I do now. And definitely more homophobic, sexist and racist language. Though I use those terms in a very loose sense.

| Fair point Lionarmour87! No doubt you're fairly local - I'm not! I still wanted to be part of the RL culture and opted to watch my local club - at the time they definitely needed all the fans they could get but I now feel part of a revival and change of fortune for the Giants. I definitely can't be accused of being a pot chaser or glory hunter can I!!
