| Quote: tvoc "My last memory of Mercer was him saying something like, 'the day Adrian Morley is better than me at any part of the game is the day I retire.'
If he'd said that about Ian Kirke he'd probably still be turning out today.
When you see the aggression Morley had in that (Cassidy) game from Central Park it's frightening to make comparisons.'"
Indeed. Had a big heart did Gary, never backed down. Tough as nails.
One of my all time fave players is Morley and even though he left too early a Rhinos great IMO.

Here's Mercer going in for the tackle. Looks like Jon Hamer's tackle.

| I watched an old DVD of Leeds versus Northern at Valley parade last night from 1993-1994 season IIRC. The one where big Roy Powell scored to win it at the death for them.
Mercer has just reminded me because he had a great game.
My observations though were that we're far better of with summer rugby but the speed of the game back then was comparative with now. The players weren't as big or athletic but were far, far more skillful. However, the major difference was what went on in the tackle and around the ruck. Even going back as recently as then it was biff tastic but it was accepted by the players and the referee. There was nobody like Fielden having a hissy fit because his ankle got trod on. What particularly amused me was how blase Eddie and Stevo were about it all back then compared to the hissy fits they now have at any penalty offence.
Oh, and Gary Rose was amazing!

| Dont understand all the criticism of Kirke, he's not our most dynamic player but does bring consistency and 'what you see is what you get' to the team and acts as a good foil to the other forwards. At the end of the day he has helped Leeds to 3 GF victories and is more than worth a Wembley place - especially now we've lost Biffa & potentially JP

there was. And an incident at every ruck that would spark a mass brawl by today's standards.

I also wondered what he was doing back there. He was so far behind the play I assumed he was injured.
Still a great sight to see though. Textbook.

| Great. Just what i want out of my forwards. Now, if he could only score the kind of wonder tries that Wayne McDonald did at Saints or Jamie Thackray did at Perpignan he'd be the complete forward.
