| Buderus' game has been built around the fact he's a little guy with a bit of speed off the mark, as befits an ex-halfback. What could he teach Diskin - a bigger, slower player altogether - about that? Or the nuggety McShane? He could give them a few tips about passing, timing of runs etc but I suspect not a huge amount else that they could use as they simply cannot do some of the things he does (and vice versa).
The point about the likes of Godden and Furner is the same. They couldn't teach kids with completely dissimilar physical attributes (and much less natrual ability) how to play like them. I bet the players who learned most from either of those two would also have been the ones that got to play alongside them.
Otherwise to teach a kid all you'd need is a video of great players in each position. 'Here lads, this is a video of great Aussie fullbacks. Watch it and come back in on Monday ready to run in 100m tries for fun against the tightest defences. That includes you Wellens.'

| I love to have him back at Hull, looked very good in the few games he played.
Strong defender and was impressed by his quick passing from dummy half.
Hopefully Kath will do buisness with Gary.

| Quote: BrisbaneRhino "The concept is generally a crock. Its been used as an apologia for average Aussies (and sometimes average older English players) as well as 'geniuses' like Buderus. Its not just ability but also style of play. What could Greg Inglis teach Lee Smith about playing centre? Nothing useful I suspect, and not due to Smith's ability - he simply cannot play the way Inglis does at 18 stone and much faster.'"
Personally I think that view is not correct and far too simplistic.
Any player who can not learn from better players, will not make it in the game. What ever position you are you will always listen and learn from better players. How do you think Sinfield became what he has?
Only last Friday night in an interview after the England football game, the goalie Joe Hart when put to him that some of his saves were very Peter Smeichal (spelling) like, he responded yes but not Peter, but Kasper, he had copied a few of his tricks.

icons077e_files/5454-3678dentheman-msnicons.jpg Your job is to say to yourself on a job interview does the hiring manager likes me or not. If you aren't a particular manager's cup of tea, you haven't failed -- you've dodged a bullet.:icons077e_files/5454-3678dentheman-msnicons.jpg |

No he is saying it doesn't matter - it is impossible to pass on experience, I am saying the opposite - there is a difference between theory and practice.

| surely it depends also on the type of player who is passing the information on?
Andrew Johns or Darren Lockyer for instance would be of great benefit to a halfback, teaching them the different kicking skills he had, when and why he would use individual kicks, what he would look for prior to making his passing decisions, little things he had picked up that help against bigger players/smaller players, how he would target someone with poor footwork, how he would recognise poor footwork etc.
Matt Gidley or Keith Senior could teach a centre a boatload of skills to help put their winger away,
there is always a balance between physicality, skills, and knowledge which makes up a player. A player like Buderus is much less physicality and much more about skills and knowledge he may not be able to make McShane a speedster, but he may have knowledge of training techniques which he uses which will give him another 10%, he clearly has the knowledge of picking and choosing the runs which gives him another few percent, which can make all the difference.
Some players are based on their physicality and their value is teaching younger players is lessoned, Inglis isnt a great player because he has great RL knowledge and a great RL brain, he is a great RL player because he is an outstanding physical specimen who has learned a good amount of RL skills, he will have much less to pass on than say a Matt Gidley or a Mark Gasnier

Read Buderus' book for just one example of what he has at least attempted to pass on to McShane. A substantial part of a players game is natural ability and his own personal style. But anyone trying to suggest they don't learn from each other is naive in the extreme.
