79/80 for me. Widnes at home was my first. Remember Atkinson scoring in the corner. We won 12 - 5 I think. . Didn't see many more wins against Widnes over the 80's and 90's.

Yep, remember them all. I cried my eyes out after the cross bar semi.

He was something special, Holmes. Still remember him putting Tony Currie in (one of my personal faves) for the winner with a reverse pass in Regal Cup game against Wigan. I spent weeks practicing reverse passes after that. Results were mixed at best.

slightly on topic the 70s side grew old together with a glut of benefits with atku , smith , dyl , holmes ward hard to replace even kevin dick apart from aussie cameos -- 2003 - 10 as well as the home grown players was our best period of replacing players with equal/better standard

From what I understand its rewarded from the RFL for his service and its 3months not 12 months . Not a full testimonial.

Happy days Doc. First game I saw was sept 72, 3 months after being crowned champions. I often wondered if I was a jinx in the years that followed.
One reason I’m a big Tony Smith fan.
You are right there are similarities now in being unable to replace Holmes, Ward, Dyl, Atky back then.
84/85 was the most frustrating for me, year of Grothe and all the others. Many disappointed, Currie and Patterson were the best. From memory we lost 4 semi finals, the last away at HKR in the premiership which definitely should have won.I saw every game which was 2 more than Coach Bamford who missed 2 coaching GB v France.
Less than 1,000 at Workington away which I think is lowest ever crowd to see a first team game. 30 of them were french school kids who turned up to see Eric Grothe and he didn’t play.
I’d be given some sort of therapy now for obsessive LRLFC syndrome. Thankfully the never ending disappointments and unimpressed women weened me off it.

It was dirtier but there was also more willingness to move the ball and take more risks and in short iMo it was
More entertaining. Defences were significantly weaker which also helped.
As part time players it was a different world

| Quote: Zoo Zoo Boom "And many look back at this era of the game with fondness - it was just out and out thuggery'" frustration as much as fondness 2 yorkshire cups and a jp the old league cup was a sp period not helped by wigan being 99% pro when others part time. Trying to catch up in the 90s nearly bamkrupted both clubs with leeds 2nd in everything finishing with the embarassing premiership. BUT it was different as part time people worked with the players , drank with them , players from different clubs mixed sunday night. And here was skill even when the aussies upped physicallity /athleticism in the backs they had ella lewis sterling mennnga kenny followed by lyons and stuart

| Never been the player he was at Hull , before we signed him. Has fallen well behind many other wingers in the game . Always had an error in his game / shows little enthusiasm at times and should never have been given his latest contract . Will be glad to see the back of him - not a fan.

| Briscoe has developed into a winger who tries to do hard yards from our line. He has good leg drive but not really the body mass to be effective in this. My problem is more some of the errors of judgement, particularly in D, and I just can't remember him making a long break for absolutely ages (despite the fact he is obviously still quite quick).
