| Quote: Keith Swiftcorn "McGuire has been utter rubbish and out of his depth on the international stage for the best part of a decade. How many more chances are you prepared to allow him, whilst condemning Briscoe to the international wilderness on the basis of just a few international performances early in his career?
Even if McGuire was a semi-competent halfback at international level (which he isn't even that), it's an absurd suggestion to be wasting a bench spot by selecting him there.
Your attempt to derail the thread by changing the subject in order to avoid defending your inconsistent application of a players poor international form guide against Australia is duly noted.'"
Duly noted........brilliant!!!!
I would agree McGuire is not the perfect solution for England, but who is? The lack of decent English halves is glaring - hence a converted New Zealander getting straight in.
I'd sooner have Charnley on the wing over Briscoe, you'll just have to cope with someone disagreeing with you. Can you manage that?

| Quote: Banielates "Mcguire hasn't even been playing international RL for a decade. Didn't he make his debut in 2004? I can't remember all his appearances, but let's look at this.
In 2004, he did well. He came on late against the aussies in the first game, and then showed up very well in the 3 games (which gb won well) before being left on the bench in the final.
He missed the 2005 tri nation IIRC.
In 2006 he played when they narrowly lost the first game to the kiwis. He missed the win over australia then came back to play the kiwis when the whole team was completly smashed in wellington. He played the final game against australia when i seem to remember he scored a try, playing with richard horne whom to my knowledge he's never played with before, or since in the halfback positions.
In 2007 Gb won a series against the kiwis but it was burrow and pryce at halfback. If mcguire played it was a cameo role at best and hardly much opportunity.
The 2008 world cup, we all know what happened there. It's hard to remember team selections and performances throughout the tournament, but in the most important game I do remember a class performance from mcguire in the final game against the kiwis, where both teams were playing to make the final.
In 2009 mcguire was poor. That's the first time you could say that in his international career.
In 2010 he was injured.
Then we arrive at 2011 and yet to be decided. I hardly think 1 or 2 poor performances in 2009 equate to ''[iutter rubbish and out of his depth on the international stage for the best part of a decade. ''[/i
You think you know everything Keith (jeff) but sometimes your opinions are just plain bullsh*t.'"
It must be very difficult to recall McGuire's performances in 2006 and 2008 down under when you weren't there. Thankfully, I was in attendance at both, so I can help you out here.
McGuire was dropped after the first game against the Kiwis in Christchurch in 2006 for a poor performance and replaced by Pryce at stand off for the game against Australia in Sydney, which GB won in his absence. Due to Carney's injury and exit from the tour after the win against Australia, Pryce had to replace Carney on the wing for the rest of the tour, hence McGuire's enforced reselection due to lack of alternatives. Despite another poor performance from McGuire in Wellington, there was no option but to select him and Horne for the final game against Australia in Brisbane due to the early departure home of Sean Long due to personal reasons. McGuire was crap throughout the 2006 Tri Nations.
In the 2008 World Cup, McGuire was dropped after the 52-4 loss against Australia. Apart from the missed tackles, the errors, the spear tackle on Inglis resulting in a penalty and the sublime grubber kick straight into the hands of Inglis leading to a length of the field try for Slater, I don't recall McGuire doing anything else of note. His return to the side for the Semi Final against the Kiwis saw him score two tries, but he was also directly responsible for the concession of three Kiwi tries along with a turnstile role in the concession of a fourth. Three further missed tackles and an ineffective tackle in that game is hardly worthy of your claim that it was a class performance from McGuire. In terms of an erroneous performance, he matched Ade Gardner that night.
If 2008 wasn't deemed as enough-is-enough, 2009 should certainly have closed the final curtain on McGuire's international career, because a couple of promising performances way back in 2004 prior to a role in the 4-44 hammering at Elland Rd just doesn't cut the mustard.

| Having your tired old material blow up in your face with the Rhinos for most of the last seven years it must be a comfort to you Keith when the internationals start and you can dig out your old tried and trusted material.
You're like a seventies comic desperately searching for another TV show to repeat your old jokes.
Keith swiftcorn, rlfans very own Jim Davidson.
We get it, you don't think McGuire is as good as the Aussies.

I've merely called you on your selective interpretation of players performances in the national shirt. You can't call for the dropping of a player (Briscoe) on the basis of his poor performance against Australia (being replaced at half time) when arguably, another player (McGuire) was also replaced just after half time (and booed off the field) in the very same game for an even poorer performance!
Had you not included McGuire in your selection (which made a mockery of your assertion that Briscoe shouldn't be considered for England given the reasons you cited) then I wouldn't have responded at all.

For an individual who has gone on record on several occasions as not being interested in international RL, may I suggest you rehash one of your tired old Buderus/Diskin threads instead? Or how about another one of your trusted material threads on 4-times SL Grand Final winner Ian Kirke? I'll start you off shall I?
FOUR.
That's 4 Grand Final rings for Diskin.
....
FOUR.
That's 4 Grand Fin.... erm, no... that's 4 drives from Ian Kirke

| Swoosh, yet again the point is missed.
McGuire is in my 17 as we simply dont have adequte/available alternatives. Briscoe (in my opinion) is not good enough at test level, in a position where we do have adequate & available alternatives.

I'm suprised you dignified it with a response. I thought you were too good for the likes of me?
Mcguire hasn't been great but he's certainly not been utter rubbish and hopeless for a decade. Everything is black or white with you, no middle ground.

There aren't adequate alternatives for Briscoe either.
What we have available is a number of players at halfback and wing positions who are Super League class, and that's all they are. None of them are adequate for international duties, and that includes McGuire, Briscoe and Hall. The last time Hall played against Australia, England were badly exposed on his wing where we conceded a glut of tries in the last 20 minutes. Neither McGuire, Briscoe or Hall are much better or worse than any of the alternatives for England. If you are arguing for Briscoe's non-selection for the reasons you cited earlier, you have to apply the same logic in the case of McGuire. But you didn't and you continue not to do so.

I responded because you put in some effort and merited it, despite the selective memory lapses. When you've spent £1000's following the international side down under on several occasions, only to witness just how poor our players are when exposed to higher standards which reside outside the comfort zone of Super League, the memory tends to be more reliable and accurate
McGuire's deficiencies outweigh any strengths he has to offer at international level and that's been the case throughout his international career. He's not the only one.
I shall reserve any undignified responses for the undignified G1 on this thread.
