It really does have Cola in it (which sounds awful!), but you can't taste it. What it does is add moisture, and the gas in it makes it really light. In fact, it's so light and moist that you can just pick up a slice and eat with nothing at all on it. Which is rare for a chocolate cake.

We use the oh so humorously named Butter substitute instead of butter for the topping. Makes it easier to spread on the top.

Highly recommended!

Did you know that, in Madeira, the stuff we call Madeira cake they call Tea Cake.
I didn't get into the usual teacake-is-a-kind-of-bread argument with them, it's bad enough trying to tell Lancastrians, never mind Madeirans.

In Madeira, they also have something called Bolos de Mel which we would call Honey Cake, it's round, brown and sweet and contains a fair old amount of honey (or, more usually, cane syrup).
I was told that is the genuine Madeira cake.
I had to try some.
Lovely with a cup of coffee.

Absolutely awful, sickly, they don't even use sugar, it tastes of saccharin, f'kin horrible, food of the devil.

If I am honest I cannot really remember what he used to say, probably done him a mis service, it was a long time ago when I was a athelete!!

I still remember something along the lines of 5 fruit and veg a day was rubbish.
Then again he used to make us eat tuna before we excersised as it didnt hurt when we vomitted so he probably had lost the plot.
