| Quote Rogues Gallery="Rogues Gallery"That's a strange one really. When I was a kid (back in the 1950's) we would go to the Wigan home games, but when they were away we would sometimes pick a Wire or Saints game to go to depending on who they were playing, to watch the likes of Fox, Gunney, Whiteley, Jones, Murphy, Bevan, Vollenhoven etc.
In the 1960's my girlfriend (now wife) would often go to Saints on a Friday night and then Wigan (home and away) on a Saturday.
We also went to Salford to watch David Watkins make his debut.'"
I may be wrong. Some market research would sway me. I just can't believe in this day and age (when those players would be readily viewable on Sky anyway) that the number of people turning up to see a visiting player would be a significant chunk of the audience.

In defence, possibly.
Behind a decent pack, he'll make Billy Slater look slow and clumsy in attack

Awfully sorry, I was following your lead ... I thought random outbursts on unprovable opinions were today's norm.

Everyone has an opinion and if you believed most of them on RL forums or in the RL press, you'd end up believing that England have the best pack in the world, the best winger in the world, the golden boot best player in the world and a full back who is better than Australia's finest! How can England not be a shoe-in for the RLWC?
OTOH, I reckon there's more chance of another RFL inquiry being set up after the event, just like there was after the 2008 World Cup, and the one before that!

It's not like you to make a grammatical error.

| Quote El Diablo="El Diablo"I'd want to see some pretty robust market research data to back that up.
Are you applying this just to Wigan fans? I can't imagine there are scores of kids going along to watch other teams when Wigan come to town saying "Dad, Dad, we HAVE to go and watch Sam Tomkins play on Friday night, can we can we pleeeeeeease." Will we see a real drop in Wigan's attendances next year if this is true? My feeling would be that we won't unless it makes a huge difference to their win ratio.'"
You are saying that star players don't increase crowds - I also like to see some robust that supports that. Why is it that the top sides in any sport command the biggest crowds of the home clubs they visit? People want to see star players

There's a difference between a top team and top players. Top teams are top teams because they have top players, so there will be a link. I'm just suggesting that it's not quite as direct as big crowds turning up to see specific individuals. Wigan are doubtless a bigger draw than most. But will that be measurably less true if Sam Tomkins leaves?

It makes you wonder why Tiger Woods can command such massive appearance money?
