| Quote AdmiralHanson="AdmiralHanson"Why not ?
We've got a strong enough squad these days with cover in many positions ... If we're an alleged championship winnable side, then there's no excuse of poor performances.
In terms of full back, we've got BJB, Lee Smith and Zak that can all cover that position and should be given a chance if the incumbent player has a shocker.
Do you want to go back to the situation we used to have before we were successful, when the likes of Franny Cummings & Co. were picked every week just because they were there and regardless of how they performed on the park week in, week out.
IMO, I thought it was a mistake to retain Webb, as we have adequate cover in his position and we perhaps could have better used that overseas space elsewhere. There's no point developing quality young replacements if you're going to have them kicking around in the A Team or on loan somewhere for years on end, if your coach / CEO hasn't got the bottle to shift off the old guard when they were long in the tooth.
In the great Wigan side of old, you were something very special to be retained beyond about 31 .... Remember they were ruthless when it came to getting rid of even their star players like Edwards, Hanley, Gregory etc. and there were always schmuck clubs knocking around like Leeds, who'd take those players off their hands gladly on the strength of past glories that they'd be unlikely to repeat on a regular basis going forward.'"
Erudite words indeed.

BJB to full back asap.'"
Smith to FB, BJB to wing, thats his best position IMO.

| Quote Fat Boy="Fat Boy"Up until Friday night I was still convinced that Webb was our better option at FB. In the pre-season and against KR I though we were getting glimpses of a pre-injury Webb.
I still believe that Webb can offer more than the youngsters at this point but if, and only if, he continues to put in as poor as a display that we were privy to on Friday then I would be prepared to drop him for for either Zak or BJB.'"
The fact is BW has already offered up a poor display .... If he's not dropped, then this is what breeds complacency within the squad, by thinking how many poor games does it take to drop me ?
Bench him now and get him and a few other senior pros thinking about what will happen if they have a bad game or not running about as if their lives depended on it, they'll find they're getting dropped and kicking their heels until such a time as their hungry young replacement makes a similar mistake ....

| I don't disagree with the sentiment, but I'd bet half the team were already thinking about the WCC rather than Wigan. BM is not going to take any risks next week - especially given we're only two games into the season and a number of potential replacements haven't even played a game yet.
I can't argue with that either TBH, but I would hope that going forward he does show a ruthless streak towards poor performers. We certainly have potential replacements for almost every position now.

Are you Maurice Bamford or Peter Fox? Sports psychology has moved on a little since the 1980s - it's not all about motivating your team through some sort of reign of terror.

| BTW I've watched the season review a few times, and in highlights Hauraki has thrown some lovely passes. However, when I've watched entire games I've been less than impressed. He was in the box seat to play in the GF, especially as part of a team that beat Wire, but he was really poor in that game, making errors at bad times and areas of the pitch.

| I don't know what game you guys were watching. The only two players who trucked the ball up with anything approaching hunger were Weller and Delaney. Leeds played for the most part like they didn't want to get hurt before Friday.
This Weller bashing is getting a bit ordinary now. If I could be bothered I bet I could find some very similar threads about JJB from a few years back, and Burrow from not so long back, and Ablett, Clarkson, McGuire and Webb.
It'll be interesting to see the stats, but even on re watching the game Weller is still coming out of it with credit.

No complaints about Delaney...but you might consider Hauraki's ball retention abilities were a little suspect

I don't know what game you were watching. JJB was a million miles ahead of anybody else, and the next closest who was miles ahead of the rest was Griffin, in regards the attributes you questioned.
Delaney may well take the ball up, but he is about as threatening as a baby rabbit. Hauraki blew so many chances for leeds he could have been the big bad wolf.
