Maybe, and I am coming a little out of left field here, the best way to form an opinion on how good players are is watch them play rather than some mathematical formula.

Utilising this crazy notion over the years I have determined, however much I rate Bailey, and I do, that at their respective peaks Peacock, Fielden and Graham were better players than him but many others in the league were not. At the current stage of their careers I have formulated the opinion that I would rather have Bailey than many other props in the league.

It's all well and good going to a game and forming your own opinion of how good a player is but that's exactly what it is... your opinion. It is subjective and open to interpretation, by having a statistical matrix to measure a player by it eradicates opinion and YOUR "crazy" own perceptions.
