Why do those people who take a friggin' drum to a match think it's a good idea? Is it a desperate look at me plea to the other travelling fans, or maybe they're hoping to catch the eye of a bored sky cameraman, so they can later recount their brief moment of fame to anyone who will listen?

errr no, it's an attempt to help atmosphere. Unfortunately the 'singing group' a) don't join in with songs they dont' start, and b) when no-one joins in, start insulting other fans (anyone remember huddersfield away). Also, as a bunch of overweight ed up blokes a lot of fans don't like joining in on principle. Plus if you're sat 100 feet away it's often difficult to hear what they're singing-which is why only one or two big chants get going. A drum is a lot easier to hear, and does most of the work. Most people CAN be bothered to shout 'rhinos' or 'leeds' at the appropriate point. They can't be bothered trying to work what thr drunkards up the back are yelling.
