Gould has a history of giving out big long contracts that the players and coaches don't then see through - usually the Panthers pushing them on.

Penrith are full on their cap, so unable to make changes to their squad for 2019 as things stand. I think they'd be delighted to get Merrin off their books (He's a big earner and they have plenty of boom youngsters in his position), as it would allow their new coach to at least so some moving and shaking in the player market.

Merrin would go well over here, though the money he'll command could probably be better spent on 2 solid signings in my opinion.

Would he be cheaper than Tapau?

He might not be on that much for a reported 4 year deal - I.e. not superstar money. I wonder what position Leeds see him in. With O’Loughlin before this, seems Sinfield and Furner are looking for a real pack leader.

Significantly I would have thought. Tapau had a rumoured asking price of around $1m when reports first emerged he could leave Manly.

Merrin is signed on crazy money at the Panthers though - he was a Gould favourite, and when he signed his current deal, Gould was talking him up as a future club, state and country captain. Pretty sure he was rumoured around the $800k mark. Whilst a very good player, he's never lived up to Goulds predictions or expectations. He is also a very good club man - one of those personalities that becomes the heart and soul of the team wherever they go.
