Sean Long has been as influential, if not more so, at Saints as Sinfield. He's won more trophies and more personal awards. He had a couple of good games for GB, including winning us a game against Australia in Sydney.
Do you think he is an all time great of the game? Or just a St Helens great?'"
Difference of opinion I guess. I dont think Sean Long has been as influential at Saints as Sinfield at Leeds.
Sinfield does not only have personal honours, but it is the leadership side where I see him as a great. Would Leeds have won the honours without his leadership of the side? some would say yes, I don't beleive so personally. We as a club have been incredibally lucky to have such a player. I for one will never forget this player for years and years to come.

| In fairness to Ramrod we should examine the merits of his claim.
For those who admire Sinfield the following can be relied upon.
Captained his club to 4 titles in 6 seasons.
Captained his club to three other major finals.
Lance Todd winner.
Harry Sunderland Winner
MOM winner in a WCC
Hosts of Leeds awards and records inc Player of the Year
Capped regularly by GB since 2000
Capped regularly for England
MOM in Saturday's high stake international against the World Champions
Nominee for Golden Boot 2009
For those who wish to denigrate Sinfield we have....
The insane ramblings of tinyrod posted during his golden time PC access and the home for the specially gifted.
As a one time poster (who himself would be red faced about Sinfield's nomination) would say.....
bwah ha ha ha ha.

| Quote: El Diablo "I think that's fair. He's certainly deserving of the tag of "A Great" at this club, but not on the wider scale of being a Great of the Game of RL. There's time yet mind you.....'" There aren't many players from our competition that get nominated for the Golden Boot.
There aren't many players from the Super League era who have played in an international against the worlds' best opposition with such high stakes and have walked away with a man of the match award.
If we're going to bestow greatness on anyone from this era then I can think of none who would merit it more.
That is without getting into a discussion about what greatness really constitutes and looking at kevin's professionalism, dedication, position as role model, articulate nature etc.
Imagine Kevin played Rugby Union. He'd be canonized by now.

Absolutely no argument from me about that, which is what makes him a Leeds great.
Hopefully this series has given him the confidence to kick on at international level and nail his place for years to come.
Perhaps more importantly, he now seems to have the full confidence of the coach and his performances have earned the support of the England fans, which he has never really had until now.

You would be wrong, there. There have been times too numerous to mention when Longy has won games for us, not only in his last minute drop goals but in his reading of a game, natural creativity and organisational skills. His presence at Saints has been crucial to their success. Absolutely crucial. Granted, over the last couple of seasons that has waned, but he had 12 years with us. Having said that, I don't think we would have beaten Wigan in the playoffs if it hadn't been for Longy. Not only was he everywhere for the full 80, he singlehandedly saved two tries. Once again, he won us a match, even in his last weeks with us. He is a very tough act to follow for any potential no.7 both in terms of his own skills and also so far as his influence upon Saints is concerned.

when considering past players who MAY haver been considered great they often had a touch of arrogance/swagger about them , Hanley, schofield, gregory, offiah , menninga, kenny , lewis, robinson for example.
Sinfield carries himself more in the manner of the late great john holmes.
Regardless of the personal awards he appears to have priority for team & club b4 self but is often the difference between winning & losing.
Mike brearley was regarded as a guru of test captaincy for the 81 ashes & his time @ middlesex but you certainly wouldn't have asked him to bat for your life.
Sinfield has never been the biggest, fastest, most skilful but as a leader & organiser of winning sides he has been peerless while carrying himself with humility & professionalism.
With this years win he dedicated it to john holmes & later spoke of memories to cherish ahead of short term financial gain & appears to treat the twin imposters equally.

True, but people forget that Long grew into that role from his beginnings as a rapid broken field runner a la Eastmond.

I don't want to run Sinfield down here, as I think he is a great club man and has finally started to show his club form on the International stage, but seriously? Great of the game? For a player that's only managed to represent his country 17 times in a 12 year career? And only shown any form in the last game and a half? I think the likes of Wally Lewis, Billy Boston, Darren Lockyer etc. might disagree regarding your definition of 'great of the game'.

Second highest ever points scorer for his club, of course he's a great - at least in terms of Leeds.
FACT based on statistics NOT personal opinion.

Why should anyone EVER listen to you? Why?
A decent clubman at best.
