The potential NRL coaching merry-go-round is Bennett to the Tigers, Seibold to the Broncos, Cleary to the Panthers. That leaves Souths in the cold, which is why the rumour is of them looking to Furner to take over.

All of this could happen, or it could all fall in a heap. Its a huge leap for Seibold to go to the Broncos, as replacing Bennett comes with huge expectations and the potential risk of your reputation being smashed as a result of not coming up to scratch, and he has a long-term contract at Souths on the table. There's also no guarantee the Tigers will release Cleary (as an aside I'm not sure why the Panthers are so obsessed with him as coach except for keeping Nathan happy).

Regardless, if it happens then we shouldn't try to force Furner to come to Leeds. Accept it, act professionally and move on. Demetriou would be my next choice, as he's very highly rated at the Broncos. Apparently Seibold has until next Wednesday to decide if he wants to stay with Souths, so we could be kept waiting until then.

Furner has issued this statement today in the Australian Newspaper- quote:

" There has been no approach(from Souths)and I was surprised to see that there were suggestions I was the coach there for the following year(2020) when my commitment is to Leeds.

My goal is to get back to being a head coach. I have ticked that off by going to Leeds. I have a great relationship there with Kevin Sinfield and Gary(Hetherington).

I would love to grab success there and I am looking forward to going back and being a head coach again . This is what my excitement is all about."

Just had a WhatsApp message from Leeds rhinos with audio of David Furner talking about how he’s looking forward to getting over here and making a start with the squad. 5th November

Not sure when they recorded it though as he sounded half asleep.

Clarification was required regarding Furner's future plans so I'm pleased with this confirmation that he will be over as planned

I'm pretty sure there was something in the Souths head coach rumour. But - as long as we're where we need to be in the end. Clearly proving difficult to bring quality to the club with the financial weakness SL has compared to NRL.

I am sure when Furner accepted the job, he new that an NRL job would come up sooner or later, and probable had the choice of biding his time or throwing his lot in with us. Glad he did and glad he has confirmed this, whether he stays for full 3 years who knows but if we get 2 years and he gets chev walker or burrow up to head coach standard then its a job well done.

Yep in fact I'd be surprised if he did stay the full 3 years. SL right now is a rehab centre / shop window for the NRL. However I do honestly believe people will be surprised at how much better Leeds will be next year - subject to a couple more key signings.
