Its a hell of a lot more since Norman retired icon_biggrin.gif

Those were the good old days of pubs, the days when a pub WAS the hub of a community and if you walked in at 12 noon on a sunday lunch you knew who would be in there, where they would be sat and what they would be drinking, the landlord knew you and he knew what you were drinking and on any Sunday lunchtime in the 1970s after Sunday League football the tap room in The Fox would be ram packed, two football teams to serve in the two hour Sunday lunchtime opening slot then home for your mothers roast beef dinner icon_biggrin.gif

Some things have changed for the worse.

Quote: Old Feller "
Any new brewery should be sited in the Aire Valley enterprise zone.'"

Still a difficult trade to operate in, the recent success of the micro brewery's is down to scale and servicing what is really a small market.

For instance there is currently a micro brewery for sale in West Yorkshire, we've half-joked in recent months that we should all chip in and buy it and get our ex-Tetleys brewer mate to run it for us, fact is that it currently brews German lager beer under licence and is obviously struggling in the market.

Those small and micro brewery's that are currently enjoying success will find all the same problems when they decide to re-finance and bring in outside investors who want to see a decent return on their money, while they are happy to brew for the love of it and for a wage every week, when you introduce investors and start talking about expansion then it fails to be a love of beer and becomes a love of money and your clientele will notice,

Leeds Brewery Midnight Bell in the Whitelocks is a good replacement for Tetleys. Fantastic pint.

Isnt it a listed building or something? It has already been said - prime land - new yuppie flats - equals big profits for some property developer!!

The Adelphi's Tetley's isn't much to write home about any more. You'd be better off with a pint of Taylors.

Years ago The Whip down in lower Briggate served a cracking pint.

They had the weirdest clientele of any pub I've ever been in though!

Problem with the Carlsberg boycott with us being rugby league fans is that Carlsberg/Tetley is the only beer served at grounds.

My Grandad used to work there for over 20 years till retiring around 1987.He told me that it was the best place in Leeds to work for and they even told him after offering the job .."the only way you'll leave is if you sack yourself..keep your nose clean and you've got a job life.."
The stories that came out of that place were fantastic and when he retired they put on a weekly Friday afternoon session for all the old workers in the bar on site.Free beers for all!!! Regularly he came out after a skinful with his mate ran for the bus,sat down huffing and puffing, only to realise they'd got on the wrong one and ended up in east Leeds rather than Moortown!!
One great story is when a mate of his went for a job there, in the stables looking after the shire horses..Mild & Bitter
" Right you've got the job, starting time is 7.When you first get in sweep the yard and clean up..but make sure you do it quietly till 8"
Mate replied " Quietly?? why must i do that?"
"Because the horses dont get up till then"
You couldnt make it up

My friend who has taken forced retirement from Tetleys on Friday used to ride his bike to work most days as part of his job was tasting the beer, yes its true icon_biggrin.gif you can take him into any Tetleys pub and he'd tell you when the beer was brewed.

They used to get a weekly allowance of cans and he'd save them up until he had a case of 24 then stick them in his backpack and ride his bike home.

Coming up to the traffic lights outside the Merrion Centre one evening with a back load of cans he stopped in front of the bus stops outside the College of Technology, forgot about the backpack, leaned back and toppled over backwards with the weight, he said he laid on the road like a tortoise unable to get up and not one person stood waiting for a bus helped him up, lots of them nearly wet themselves laughing though.
