What about it? Or am I being a bit dim.
Quote: Norman Stanley Fletcher "Was that when Backo went over under/next to the sticks to win it?'"
I think the reference is to another Yorkshire Cup (1st round) game V Hull at Headingley, when Crooks eventually contributed a try and 6 goals in a comeback 28-24 win once he'd got over his reluctance to play. My other major recollection from that game was that it was Peter Tunks' Leeds debut (another try scorer that day) and that he was a big ba5tard after he walked off the cricket pitch during the pre game warm up.
It was the season before the Backo game and Backo moment that made his journey over worthwhile. Pure joy.

That was a great night and great days! SS full of fc fans! no bother! it was a cold night(i think)
I remember it been half way between the sticks and the touch line to right as you face the western terrace. perhaps slightly nearer the touch line.

No, I think that one was a night match. The one I was talking about was a Sunday afternoon.
Perhaps tvoc can help, he usually has a good memory of these things.

I'm sure you're mixing up to different games against Hull. The Backo try with half of Hull hanging onto his back I recall winning a tight game. The comeback win featured Brooke-Cowden and Medley coming off the bench, and Deadly Medley scoring a hat-trick. He got man of the match for something like 30 minutes play, IIRC. Next week, Reilly picked Brooke-Cowden to start. He really, [ireally[/i didn't like Paul Medley.
All of this is from my aging memory, of course. I will happily bow to your superior knowledge if I'm wrong.

Wasn't that game with Medley against Cas?
My memory too is aging, it just seems to ring a bell.

| Right, lets see
Already dealt with above.

The Backo try was slam dunk under the sticks at the Eastern Terrace end of the ground. In addition there can be no confusion with any other try Backo may have scored for Leeds as ...... eh there weren't any.

Yes one of us is getting mixed up.
The game I think you are recalling was against Bradford Northern in the Yorkshire Cup 1st round at Headingley in the 1988/89 season. And here's why; Brooke-Cowden and Medley were the subs that day - Check. The following game Reilly picked Brooke-Cowden to start - Check. (Incidentally that following game was a 32-0 home win V St Helens with Slammin Sam making his Leeds debut.)
Nah then, Paul Medley only scored the one try hat-trick in his Headingley career and that was at home V Castleford (January 198icon_cool.gif in a game he started rather than coming off the bench. I think what secured his MOTM in the YC game V Bradford (from the bench) was he literally turned the game on it's head by scoring one long range try and making a huge break for another by Carl Gibson both down the left hand flank in front of the Southstand heading towards the Western Terrace.

Bill Carter was like Dennis Waterman in Little Britain - he wrote the programme, made the announcements, did the press releases, he even turned up before everyone else and unlocked the gates - and he was in charge of programme selling, yes
Nice chap Bill Carter. Wasn't his official title Secretary?

| Medley also scored a few tries straight from kick offs (ie. he caught the ball from the kick off/restart and then ran and scored). I can't think of anyone else doing this in any game I've seen.
As for Crooks (mentioned earlier), I remember he didn't have the best luck with injuries. He had hamstring problems when we first signed him and then famously did his shoulder in spectacular fashion in the JP semi at Bolton. I don't think he got over that while at Leeds as he put so much flab on while recovering.

And it's at this point I usually paste this imagehttps://www.fotothing.com/photos/1d0/1d089fbca19419b65b37397570c3c8a4.jpg" >
OK always rather than usually.

| Didn't Tunks do his groin in the JPS semi too? I seem to recall Ray Ashton running around like an idiot and ending up headbutting Tunks in his 'area'.
