Quote: Pie_Eyter "I thought we were decent in the second half yes but more dogged and committed than good. So if you are below average, how do you beat an average side? Your original point indicated you should be beating a side like Wigan when the Leeds one isn't all that good either. We all want a return to the glory days but financial constraints and the rise of the NRL's millions makes it very difficult for now (And they still don't have a better WCC record despite all their posturing) Iv'e embraced the fact that without Wigan and Leeds in particular constantly churning out youth then rugby league would be dead in this country. The rest of SL needs to up it's game. Wigan, Leeds, Saints and Warrington are propping the game up in this country. The problem of 'average sides' (though i am quite happy) isn't the fault of Wigan or Leeds.'"

I agree mate.
I`m saying that you had some of your better players missing and were 14 nil down away and we blew it.
I don`t think we are that good but much better than we have been for several years.
Imo I didn`t think Wigan were top of their game but you deserved to win yet a moment of madness by Newman cost us.
You have some very good youngsters coming through once again.

Anyway People on here were hacked off when we were winning titles galore. Perhaps the poster earlier is correct i should probably give this place a miss for a while after 24 years of being on SS the negativity is getting too much for me.'"

You'd be missed mate. I lost my Dad earlier this year. He took me to Headingley for the first time when he was six and he finally gave up his season ticket a couple of years ago. Almost from game one ( Widnes at home) my glass was half full and his was half empty. We bickered incessantly about it all our lives. I always thought I was the fan and he was the carping misery guts, yet when Sinny lifted the championship in 2004 tears were running down his face. It meant everything to him. My point, if I have a point, is that people express their love/devotion in different ways, but that doesn't mean they don't want the same thing. I like to think that's true of this forum. Grumps and cheerleaders alike ultimately we all want Leeds to be the best. Clearly I''ve had a scotch too many and tomorrow I'll be tearing my hair out when somebody suggests Smith should be sacked, but tonight I'm feeling reasonable.

And while I'm here that's a fantastic post. My Dad died over 25 years ago but we were the same as you and your old man. Brought it right back for a minute. Cheers!

My dad was like the dad in Fever Pitch. I was all emotion and he was relentlessly logical. He even dared to say that the other team might have been better than Leeds when we got hammered. Sacrilege.

Fabulous post. Brought back memories of my father. He was always very respectful of the opponent and always said to me give credit where it’s due and enjoy watching the great sides as nothing lasts forever.

Hope Chris stays on here, he’s a great contributor

Something I don't think that's been mentioned but It did seem that there was a different approach with it being knock out rugby.

Quote: LeedsLurch "The over reaction is getting tedious.
We lost a close, fairly entertaining game to a better side. Had a chance to win it with 5 minutes to go.
It seems if we don't win we are doomed according to most on here and tbf it's getting very boring.
Same as the get a centre, fb, hb. Never mind contracts and salary cap, if I stamp my feet enough I might get what I want.
Got to be honest, it's doing my head in.'"

Quote: Backwoodsman "I certainly don’t want the coach or players sacked after poor performance. However at the end of season the club will have to make a decision regarding smith. Not progressing in the cup once again is woeful, brushing aside Newmans blunder we were second best, the score was flattering due to Wigans goal kicking failure. Personally if we don’t end up the top four I would consider that a failed season. On that basis smith should be sacked.'"

No progress in the cup would be unacceptable if we just lost to Batley or Fev, we lost to the team up at the top end of the table. Get a grip

I for one don't think Smith should go but I do think he needs better coaching support - two rookie assistants isn't great and how much influence can they possibly have.

I would like the team to win every week but I don't consider it a right. What I do expect is a team to play somewhere close to its potential most weeks and be able to do the basics. These are full time athletes after all. You can blame the players for that but some of this has to be down to the coaching. Olpharts dropped a ball he should have caught but look at the pass it was nowhere near where it should have been.

The Aussies beat us all the time because they do the basics so much better than we do - perhaps the players are more gifted and can read the game much better which makes executing the skills easier. Greater competition for places I suppose concentrates your mind and your work ethic

The abuse for Olpherts is laughable, he dropped a ball coming out of his own end but for most the game he was effective a making metres out of our own half. He's definitely this years scape goat.

don't blame him for Saturday, the pass he dropped was a shocker, but to suggest he has been anything but very poor this season is wrong

He hasn't started his Leeds career off well I agree, and he's not one of the players i would have singled out for criticism for Saturday.
