Easy Does It for England Over The Kumuls

Following a comprehensive win for the Women over Canada in their group match it was the turn of the men to impress on the great surface at the DW Stadium as they took on Papua New Guinea in their quarter final match with the prize on offer a semi-final against either Tonga or Samoa.

It was Papua New Guinea´s fifth game against England with them having lost on every previous occasion, PNG did however beat a Great Britain Lions side in 2019 when they met them in Port Moresby in a tour match.

England were big favourites for the win, The Kumuls getting a twenty-four-point lead on the coupon, but Shaun Wane wasn´t taking the challenge lightly. An England loss was surely unthinkable.

PNG Orchids Book Semi Spot in Second World Cup

Papua New Guinea’s men had a shock against England in Wigan, but no-one expected the Orchids women’s team to do anything other than march over newcomers Brazil in the first game of the Hull double header - despite having no World Cup win to their credit before this tournament.
It was the women from PNG who had been the newcomers in the last World Cup, back in 2017, but their 34-12 win of Canada - semi finalists in ’17 tournament - in the last round.
After a baptism of fire against England in the  first round, the Amazonas made a number of changes, bringing in new players to the match day 17 and  moved others around, particularly looking at strengthening their edge defence.

The lad playing full back for Fiji is a real firecracker. Only two games in the NRL. Stick him on the 2024 shopping list.

New Zealand Scramble Into Semis After Fijian Scare

New Zealand - ranked No 1 in the world - took on Fiji in the third rugby league World Cup quarter final of this weekend, with the winner facing Australia in the semis.
The Black and Whites were clear favourites, despite the Bati’s famous 2017 win at the same stage, that dumped the Kiwis out of the competition that year, and their own failure to convincingly gell as a team in the tournament so far.
New Zealand kicked the game off, after both teams initially went to the wrong ends. Both teams exchanged steady opening sets, with the the Kiwis making slightly more territory - and promptly surrendering that advantage by being caught offside.

Wasn't it Tom grant who bolloxed up yesterday for the England try that had to go to captains challenge when the PNG FB dropped it?

Edit yes it was. 2 embarrassing calls.

Tom Grant.
Didn`t he mess up in a Leeds game last season too?
Terrible decisions today and should show why he is not fit to referee.

Quote: chapylad "I agree and feel Mik has been above average in nearly all of the Leeds games he played in.
Nothing brilliant and not poor.
This is probably down to the amount of minutes and games he has played and having to carry an underperforming pack for the last 2 years.
All that said he is much better than Cooper.
I did think picking Hill was a mistake but he has stood up so far in the games he`s played.'"

You cant say that on here - you do know Mik is the greatest forward in SL and he can walk on the surface of the River Aire down at Kirkstall if you believed the hype on here.

My view good potential but will not develop much more - improving his defence needs to be no 1 priority - it isn't his best quality

Ahead of Hill or Burgess - take your blue&amber specs off. Time for a reality check - he just isnt as good as many on here think

I like Mik. He has the ingredients to be a good quality prop, but he has some developing to do. Seems to play within himself at times, like he doesn't want to let rip. McDermott said it once that he needs to remember he's a prop. But he is young (24). Burgess 30, Hill 35, Cooper 34, Thompson 27, Lees is also 24.

I'd be more disappointed as Luke Thompson not being picked over Cooper

I agree with you Thompson's stats were the best of all the props not getting selected must be disappointing

On Mik - it is almost as constructive criticism is frawned upon on here. Many are blinded to his shortcomings

To be fair on Mik he's also been pretty short handed in terms of other supporting front rowers. Leading the pack on his shoulders at 24, not bad and for what it's worth I think he will continue to improve, largely due to his attitude.
