Soon we will be dancing the Fandango
FROM 2004,TO DO WHAT THIS CLUB'S DONE,IF THATS NOT GREATNESS THEN I DONT KNOW WHAT IS.
JAMIE PEACOCK: |

| Quote: Highbury Rhino "I have consistently thought Mac to be a good coach - yes even whilst at Harlequins. Equally I have thought him to be a fairly poor performer on TV (way too enigmatic and thoughtful for today's sound bite/easy on the ear culture). Even this aspect of the job has improved considerably for Brian and some of his TV interviews towards the back end of last season were really entertaining and enlightening - albeit yuo always had a sense that at any second he might just jump up and thwack his interviewer.
I always thought that Bluey was terrible as an interviewee - even though he pretty much always said the 'right things', never really rated him as a club coach either even though results seem to suggest he was one of Leeds's best ever coaches.'"
Lets face it both Brians had a really good group of players.

| Yes they did but they and in particular McDermott had to deal with a lot of disruption and the blooding and bringing through of a lot of relative newcomers/kids at the same time...

Surely thats part of being a sports coach. If it was just a case of taking the best players and playing them, Im sure more people'd be able to do it

You've just described Brian McLennan in a nutshell there.

It'll be interesting to see how the NZ Warriors fare in the NRL now that McClennan is the coach.

With the help of dad too, it would seem.

IIRC his dad also came with him when he coached over here.

| Another interesting link to Leeds in that article....Dean Bell involved in youth development at Warriors...the same guy that brought so many of today's SL champions through the youth system at Leeds.

Did he?
Bell packed up at the end of the 1999 season to move into a similar role with Wigan. At that time Sinfield and I think JJB had already made their first grade debuts, while McGuire and Burrow were still at least 18 months away from breaking into the first team squad.
Bell may well have put structures in place that served the club well, but I'm not sure he can take too much credit for the development of young players in his two years in a youth role at Leeds.

Your point duly acknowledged. Bell nevertheless takes a lot of the credit for putting those systems in place.
It's worth remembering that Sinfield broke through at a very young age. Some of the others may have taken longer to get into the first team, and I may be wrong, but I'd have thought many of them would have been there as juniors under Bell.

1883.jpg Didn't William Webb Ellis pick up the ball and run, someone should really tell Rugby Union.

However, I'd like you to be given the opportunity to prove you're right by approaching Brian, telling him what you think and listening to his reaction.'"
Honestly Id like to be proved wrong.
Ive never heard him in person so cant comment on that. My view is based on seeing his TV interviews and reading the written word of his interviews (think this is in danger of turning into a disclaimer).
On that basis he fails to engage the audience, his tone is monotone and his eyes are fixed on the floor. Im no media trainer but he comes across lacking any umph.
Not disputing what he has got out of the players, more in the scond half of the season and I clearly said he should recieve recognition for that.
But personality... sorry, Ive never seen it.'"
You have just described Tony Smith.
