Not good enough, but we will get better. The major difference today was finishing - they scored 3 very good goals with shots that couldn't really have been hit much better - our one decent chance from Howson was hit very well but went straight at the keeper, and the least said about Paynter's effort the better - despite being clean through I never though for a second that he'd score.

To their credit, Southampton played pretty well - there will be much worse teams in the league than them this year. We badly need one or two more signings before the end of the transfer window otherwise it's going to be a mid table struggle. I don't see us being relegated though.

Acres of empty space between halfway and the penalty box. Defensive midfield still the problem, as anyone who's seen Utd even occasionally over the last few years would know.

He really isn't according to what I've been hearing about his personal life and thats the reason the rumour about giving him the first 5 games came about. Should all come out in next few weeks!

What have you heard?

We have had over 3 months to sort the defence out and if anything yesterday looked worse than last season. A loaned centre back playing left back, a centre back "cult hero" that has not played seriously for over a year, another centre back that shouldn't play for another year and a right back that is average at best. Couple that with no support from midfield and it shows how deep the problem is.

All summer on message boards the fans have been divided over Bates - yesterday in the ground there was not much division and a lot of anger, and a few more performances like that and it can only get worse

I'll pm you. Basically Leeds see this as gross misconduct and if we have a crap start to the season (which looks likely) they'll sack him without paying him a penny in compo
