So, if the ball left his hands backwards, and the player had no forward momentum of his own to influence the path of the ball, what magical jiggery pokery happened to the ball to make it go forward?

Yes, it can BOUNCE forward, but it can't LAND forward of the passer. The ball was thrown forward by the passer.
Sutcliffe was not moving forward with the momentum to move the ball forward at the rate it did. |

You never tire of being wrong, do you?
If I am - for example - playing with a strong wind at my back I can pass the ball laterally and have it land in front of the point at which I passed it, even if I am standing still. It's still a legitimate pass, despite the fact it lands in front of where I released it.
The only criteria that matters is the direction of the ball the split second it leaves my hands. Providing that is not forward, it is not a forward pass. |

Yes, but the ball cannot change direction UNLESS another force acts upon it, such, as you suggest, wind (of which there was none), so, without momentum imparted by the direction of the passer (of which there was none), how on Earth did the ball move forward after leaving his hands?
