| You may be right re. Newman but the coach isn't making him drop the ball or try to beat the entire opposition on his own every time he gets the ball. Newman needs to learn how to play with his team mates better - maybe that's a coaching issue too but I think he's always been a bit of a glory boy. He just needs reining in a bit at times - he would look better running into space with some structure agreed.

| Almost all our players, Newman, Smith, Miller and others are all just trying way too hard. The team has no direction or concept of building pressure on an opposition. Rohan's style dictates a boom or bust approach to wonder plays that have such a low success rate with no plan B, so no wonder players are constantly trying to make something out of nothing.
With Newman, Oledski and smith, I think we're seeing players who care too much, but don't have a coach who is capable or willing to give them a framework to succeed from.
I've just listened to House of League with Matt Shaw saying there are lot's of players who don't believe in RS's style of play. You can see that on the pitch. We actually need a coach to come in and take the pressure off the players, give the players a really basic game plan, simplify things back to the basics of RL. Run hard, tackle hard, build pressure, build field possession, force an error, run support lines, commit more men to dominate the ruck, make space for the players around you. Don't try to score on every play.

| I don't disagree, however, he isn't getting early ball in space. I think he is trying too hard to have an impact and overplaying. I suspect if he played like he did for England where he simply waited for opportunities (because he was surrounded by good players) that he would be criticised for not digging in and trying to have an impact on the game.
I feel when Newman first broke through, he was bigger in size than he is now and is too lightweight. I wonder particularly in leg size whether he has reduced in size to lower his hamstring risks, which has had a knock on effect in terms of his power and line breaks.

| C Smith is also maybe doing too much defending, he’s top of the tackle charts.
Which will be partly due to the style we play

| C Smith needs to simplify it right down and play like a prop even if he's not picked there. Just run and tackle hard.

| Cams no Dave Heron that’s for sure, he does need to adapt to being more about yardage than as a ball player.

| Dave Heron could literally have run rings around Cameron. He would have made a great stand off if he'd moved their earlier in his career. Except for kicking, which I don't remember him doing?

| I think people are being a bit harsh on Cam, he's an excellent ball playing 13 playing in a poor side

Yes, but he's always been one of our top tacklers.

| Holroyd's a prime example of why you need a big rotation of genuine props. Until last year he'd barely played more than a handful of games a year. There had been rumours of him being unhappy with Rohan as well?
Just on Cam Smith. He can be a 'good' ball handler when he's second or third receiver. He's utterly terrible when he tries to make plays happen. When he's out of form, which he is, he needs to just focus on banging the ball in. That's what the team needs, not someone who kills momentum. We had similar issues with Sutcliffe at stand off. Some players just cannot handle that role.

| I am torn on Cam Smith. I think there is a good player in there who is just out of form. At this time I would just put him into the bench rotation and bring Corey on after 30 mins and move JOC to 13 for a spell. My bigger problem is that I’ve seen nothing on the field that makes me think he is a captain.

| Is there any natural captain in the squad? Croft doesn't seem to have much of a voice on the field. You can see why being chief playmaker didn't work for him at the Broncos. Frawley would seem to check the right boxes for captain except there's not much evidence he can actually play to any standard.

I think he could be a good one but often he is a ball playing loose forward who doesn’t actually pass the ball, which makes him a second rate prop at the moment.
I thought he really came
On last year but he is one of many who needs some strong coaching.
On Saturday I recall Hull props getting at least 3 offloads away when him and Holroyd were jointly involved in the tackle.
As for TH I thought he would really make it when he was young but he was miles off on Saturday and I think he is in the last chance saloon with a new coach

This is a pretty significant issue within the club as a whole, in my view. RS was a 'hands off' coach in terms of managing what was actually happening on the pitch. That would be less of an issue if you had the likes of JP, Sinfield and Mags on the pitch taking charge of things themselves.
Passive coaching and passive players with no one standing up and marshalling them has made us look and play like wet cardboard cut outs.
I don't really think there is anyone obvious in the squad who could be captain (they are a bad bunch), but Rhys Martin (of them) is one - he plays most weeks, has responsibility for kicking and has played different roles, so has some sense of what is needed. He is also captain for PNG as well (if I remember right) and has played in big games so has that too.
Otherwise, it is a struggle to pick anyone else. They all have massive flaws!
