Apart from the checking out of the desired target, his style is reminiscent of Kevs. Let's hope in twenty years time young players are emulating it because he was a Loiners legend. As long as its what settles him to be calm and focused, can't really see a problem.

Quote: Superted " I actually think what he's doing is having a negative effect on his kicking, I'd love to see his kicking stats pre-gimmick/post-gimmik.'"

This season is the first time he's kicked at goal at 1st grade level - I've no idea if there was a pre gimmick period. It was fun to see when it appeared V Wakefield and he went 7 from 7 including the one from the sideline so I would say who cares as long as it works for him but since then it's been 7 from 13 - overall 70% success rate from 20 attempts - below average for a top marksman.

Cheers for the figures TVOC... 70% not a bad figure at all for a rookie to be fair.

No worries.

2015 (Sinfield 137/162 74% (Sutcliffe 54/73 73% (Sutcliffe 14/17 = 82%, Golding 14/20 = 70%, Burrow 4/6 = 67%, Watkins 1/1 = 100%, Lilley 0/1 = 0%, )

Quote: Superted "Jeez some folk on here are a little precious and defensive.

I started my post by stating how I'm a big fan - his overall game is improving and he's showing plenty of promise... it's just one small thing that I believe is being done for the wrong reason, and IMO could actually have a negative impact on just his conversion attempts - hardly pulling the kid to bits.

Please accept my unreserved apologies... I shall remember not to dare discuss any observations or thoughts on potential development areas of the players moving forward...

Everything is rosy - peace and goodwill to all...'"

You believed it was done for the wrong reason? You were wrong! Can't see why you're getting upset that people challenged your view given they've seen the kid do it at junior level and beyond. You've been corrected so what's the problem?

At least he hasnt reached Jamie Soward level ridiculousness

Anyone whos done any goalkicking knows that routines are for 2 reasons
1 to lower heart rate
2 to take out pressure as a factor by making sure you exactly the same as you do on the training field

If tracing the posts helps Golding do that then who cares

Fact is we need a kicker of at least a 75% season average, hopefully that will be Golding

GH said all players need gimmicks now if they want a better contract, Ferres' gimmick is that every 6 weeks he's going to put on Rob Burrows body weight in fat.

Personally I like Golding he has been working hard on all aspects of his game. As to his kicking style ,his head tilt is a shortened version of Owen Farell method for aiming at sticks but if as others have said it works for him then great...As with all kickers they will have off days..even JT does. The thing is about maintaining consistency in choice of kicker even when player is having an off period..not to change as this will effect confidence not just in kicking but in other areas.

Here are some other stats on Kev..

2003 141 attempted 106 goals 35 missed 75% success rate
2004 164 attempted 129 goals 35 missed 79% success rate

2008 137 attempted 106 goals 31 missed 77% success rate
2009 135 attempted 107 goals 28 missed 79% success rate
2014 95 attempted 74 goals 21 missed 78% success rate

I think this is not really fair for those only kicking 50 goals is much easier to have a higher percentage and not as representative as those on 100+ goals. I would put Adam Reynolds at the top

I understand what SuperTed is getting At, but if he didn't have an off day against Wire it wouldn't be raised. We always hear how sports people especially are creatures of habit and routine. If this is something Golding started doing recently, and the coaching staff noticed an adverse effect, I'm sure they would have stamped it out. But good on the kid. He's come in and is getting better with each game, and just as importantly he's adding some personality to the sport. Too often the stories are about players doing wrong...how many young kids are doing ithe routine on pitches all over the place.
