Whatever people may think of todays Ref a 17-7 penalty count is not good enough and players need to adapt much quicker to the style of the ref in any given game and quickly learn what he is and isn't letting you get away with.'"
Big daft lads etc etc
It might not be their call either, if they've been given a game plan that involves trying to slow down the PTB and turn each tackle into a wrestle (as commented on this afternoon) then individuals out on the pitch might not want to make their own call about changing that game plan.

Which one was that D ??
After the break Senior and cover tackle on Burrow by Brough??
I thought the one in the 2nd half when he seemed to be tackled twice was worse but we were at the other end so couldn't be sure.

| Quote: deanos rhinos "....have just returned from the game and don't know wether to laugh or cry, especially at the refs performace. I'm not saying that the ref has made us lose today because I think we were'nt that far from winning, we just needed a bit of luck. Danny, Rob and Ali all made good breaks that I believe if our confidence was higher and we'd had some luck we could have easily converted those into points. The interception did'nt either. We're not quite at the races yet, and I'm sure it will come soon, I don't want to be playing our best footy now, we can leave that until the summer.
But I would like to comment on the ref, I though he was totally out of depth and was not fair for either side, we lost the penalty count 17-7, but it's not the number of penalties that bother me (well it does a little) it's where they are on the field and if they are back to back. Wakefield had 2 back to back and scored from both, that's just bad discipline. 80m bad discipline. But he did'nt control the ruck and seemed to ping us very quickley, the one against Buderus near the end was possiblely the quickest PTB of the game. It was laughable I'd just like to see more consistancy, by treating both sides the same. There was only 1 penalty in the game for not standing square, something he chose not to police for 65 mins, then he pulled us for offside under our own posts twice in 3 sets, Brough kicked the last one. At various times at the end of the first half when we were attacking and could have scored, not 1 defender had any foot behind the line, never mind 2 feet, again something he chose not to police. My point is, to give your opponants 17 more sets in a game will make the game very hard to win, but I think not all were warrented, he did'nt penalise both sides for the same offence. He seemd to pick and chose, this is what Sinfield was pointing out and Peacock was too in the first half, he pointed to the place where Rob B. was tackled and held down by Brough in the first half, probably saving 6 points and could have been sin binned. If we don't get treated the same as other sides we are going to be on the end of some big penalty counts and will struggle to make if 4 in a row. Certain Leeds players need to get off the tackled man very quickly......or else.'" beaten by a better side

Last week for example Ian Smith was allowing some very slow play the balls but today by comparison Child almost seemed to want immediate roll away so neither we or the players know where they are one week to the next.
Whatever people may think of todays Ref a 17-7 penalty count is not good enough and players need to adapt much quicker to the style of the ref in any given game and quickly learn what he is and isn't letting you get away with.'"
Using Ian Smith as an example probably isnt a good idea. The guy is awful at the top level. The rest at least have some potential but each ref struggles with a different aspect apart from Ganson and maybe Silverwood. We really miss Klein IMO. At least before half the refs were competent. Now only a couple are for all aspects of the game. Give them chance though. In a few weeks they will settle down and the games will flow more.

Tevita Leo-Latu was held down in exactly the same way after making a 40 m break in the first half, no sin bin!

The effort in the last 15 was a positive for us and gives them something to build on for next week but overall not good enough and needs to improve whcih i think it will.'"
As I said it would'nt have taken a great deal more effort for us to win this game, so the odd direction changing penalty now and again really has a major impact on the flow of the game. The holding down of Burrow is a good example, penalty, sin bin of Brough, and 6 more on the line, instead we got 1 more tackle and a rushed offload to which went to ground.

| We were out-coached, out-thought and out-played. It really is that simple.
A disappointing game, made all the more arduous by having to stand near some of the most ignorant (of the rules) and, sadly, loud, fans of our team.
Rather than worrying about officials, we should be worrying about our performances (if there really is any need to worry this early).
Have Wakey had refs on their side so far this season? Hull? Warrington? Wigan? I suspect not, they've played well. We need to start.
P.S. as I left the ground I texted the Mrs and told her there'd be a thread on here about the ref.....

Far too many poor passes that missed the man today the timing was awful 1st half and at times we seemed to be panicking on every set

| Child was also the video-ref that thought O'Loughlin was on-side for Wigan when scoring his "try" on friday night. That try was 10x more offside than the Lee Smith grand final try, and look what uproar that caused. He will soon get a very, very important desicion wrong.
