| It was fast wasn't it. I'm incredibly lazy though. It took me 10seconds to watch his race.

| Quote: El Diablo "Indeed. To be fair to Tyson Gay I think he was just very disappointed. To run 9.71s and not even get close to winning must be hard to take. He always conducts himself very well and gave full credit to Bolt. Like the 400m in the Johnson years, everyone else is just running for 2nd place in the 100m at the moment. Unfortunately for Tyson Gay I don't see things being too different in the 200 either.'" Bolt has said numerous times he doesn't really likt the 100m, 200 is his prefered distance!

| Shame for Tyson Gay he was born in this era....
..Saying that, had a discussion last night whilst watching the final, and I said it could be possible when Bolt stops running that the World record would never ever be beaten.
One lad then said that it will be beaten and the world record will only always keep going lower and lower due to technology, better training etc etc. I argued that it doesn't matter what era, it's still a foot race and he would still be the quickest man on the planet.
He then said back 10 years ago, 15 years ago, it would have been a good race between him, Maurice Greene, Linford Christie etc etc.
I suggested that was madness but he was adamant that it is due to modern times. Anyone else got any views on this?

I think your mate's about right. It's no coincidence that the times in the 100m (not just Bolt, but everyone's) are getting steadily quicker. Advances in training, nutrition and other aspects of sports science dictate this. Even the tracks are faster now than in the days of Christie, Lewis et al. Usain Bolt may also, IMO, be naturally the fastest man ever to lace up a pair of spikes, but there's more to it than that. There is, of course, a question of how fast the human body can actually go. And I don't remember any of his predecessors in my lifetime being quite as dominant as Bolt is. Sprinting has been short of superstars lately, and you could argue that he doesn't face the same competition as some of those mentioned did, but given what the likes of Gay and Powell can do, I don't really think that's true. He may be the best around, he may be the best there has been, but it's entirely likely that somebody else will come along sooner or later and go even faster.

| He's like Don Bradman. He is so far ahead of anyone else, it has to be more than just training methods, better equipment etc...etc....
I am glad to be around to witness his brilliance.

Well consider this. According to various agencies North American Track and Field Athletics loses it's top ten percentile of it's fastest athletes to the NFL draft.
No doubts at all that the tracks help. First time I ever ran a competitive 1500m on a rubberised track I took nearly 20 secs off my time.
