| The general English or British public are familiar with Headingley as a result of Botham's efforts in the 81 ashes test, for it being the site of Boycott's 100th 100 vs the Aussies & the place where Don Bradman made 300 runs in a day to win a test for Australia.
Cricket is what has put Headingley on the map not the efforts of Leeds RL or the Rhinos.
The stand that links the ground is known generally as the football stand not the rugby stand.
Sad but true.
Manchester is known the world over due to Man U, Liverpool is known through being the home of the Beatles.
The rest of the world is sadly ignorant even of the existence of Leeds.

| Quote: ISPY "Our great city has plenty of excerllant sporting venues ie Elland rd,South Leeds Stadium,Headingly, and a new arena being built, not to mention others that i have forgotten. So why jepordise Rugby league this great game of ours by trying to reduce the number of teams in super league simply by placing objections to the Newmarket development programme. Super league need more teams competing not less in order to develop more young talent and hopefully attain the Australians standard of rugby league. Come on Leeds council stop being selfish and look to the future after all without competition you have no sport.'"
I don't get it. Are Leeds City Council lobbying the RFL for less teams in SuperLeague? Seems a bit weird.
If they are then I would wholeheartedly support them (whilst wondering why LCC of all people are getting involved). SuperLeague needs 10 teams to become stronger, maybe 12 at a push.

If it was the case the council just said no without any justification this challenge can be over ruled by taking it above their head. However if they have justifcation, then you have to fight this and it can get very costly'"
You can appeal the decision if it is refused, simple. No Council, not even one as incompetent as Bradford's many, are going to refuse without justification. The amount of consultation involved is huge.

"Leeds is the greatest club in Rugby League"
Alex Murphy 2011: |
|
| Quote: Andy Gilder "Cobblers.
You ask sports fans or members of the general public from outside the M62 corridor to name sporting teams based in Leeds, and I would quite happily bet that a much higher percentage would be able to tell you Leeds United than Leeds Rhinos.
The Rhinos would probably get about the same recognition levels as Yorkshire cricket.
The council has a job to do, namely to protect the interests of its residents. That includes ordinary households as well as businesses, indeed probably more so as businesses don't get a vote at local elections.'"
Cobblers.
As a follower of both Leeds Utd and Leeds Rhinos I can assure you the profile of Leeds Rhinos has soared over the last few trophy laden years whereas the profile of Leeds utd has diminished season upon season. Wayne Rooney tweeting that Leeds are "his team" in rugby terms is an indication of how our team has pricked the conciousness of plenty of people out there. For Adrian Durham on talksport to dedicate so much time talking about Leeds Rhinos, and in particular Kevin Sinfield, on a station that normally disregards Rugby League I would say that is a big indicator that our success has kept Leeds on the sporting map. Leeds Utd are lucky to get a postage stamp sized match report in the Sunday broadsheets nowadays, they don't even get a mention in most.
The council does indeed have a job to do when protecting its residents, unfortunately it seems to pick and choose when to do this. Have you walked down Kirkstall Road in the shadow of the carbuncle built in the cricket ground recently. Everyday must feel like a permanent eclipse for the unfortunates living in its shadow. Strange how the Council didn't seem to "protect" the residents on this occasion eh ? I don't mind if the Council are consistent in their actions, but it would appear they're obviously not to allow such a monstrosity to be built and then suddenly change their tune when a much smaller development is planned on the other side of the ground.

| Tend to agree re the cricket pavilion. It looks hideous and seems to me alot larger and certainly more of a eye sore than the new southstand.

Good post ,I agree with all your comments. The Carbunkle mostrocity, they had the opportunity to enhance the Victorian archecture in the neighbourhood it looked like someone had been doodleing and the boss said "we'll have that "yes they did allow licence to the Cricket, and there were big objections too. Also have you noticed there lloks to be more Rhinos shirts than Leeds united around the city?Isee football shirts from other clubs worn by out of town students, but not a lot of Leeds utd shirts

It certainly is a puzzle how that one got through. I can only think of 2 possibilities; the cricket pavilion is surrounded by 'commercial' properties - hotels, shops, student flats - whereas as the South Stand backs on to private housing. Secondly the pavilion was largely funded & is used by Leeds Met Uni.

There's a huge difference between providing a loan to keep Test cricket, something that massively benefits the local economy, in Leeds and providing a loan to help a tax exile buy some playing fields in Wetherby.

Not sure what you mean Pal. Planning authorities are legally able to obligate developers to undertake related infrastructure works that are necessary to make a development acceptable, such as highway improvements, affordable housing, as part of a section 106 Agreement. Apart from the planning fee that's all the Council will get out of it.
Unless you are suggesting bribery Pal.

| Why did LCC mention that we would have excerllant training facilities at Newmarket in their bid to host the rugby world cup. The world cup bid failed then they publicly announce/ lodge objections to the Newmarket development. Our city alone has enough venues to cater for such things. There is no logic here. Open your eyes LCC and appreciate what we have in the city of Leeds.
